Ten reasons why Joe Jackson's commitment means so much to the Memphis Tigers

September 11, 2009 | Posted By Andy Arnold

The long-awaited commitment by Joe Jackson to the Memphis Tigers will finally happen tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Finch Center.

I have been trying all morning to think of a commitment that has the potential to do for the Memphis program and its fan base what this one will likely do. Without digging back through the archives, I would venture to guess this is the biggest local commitment to the Tigers since Penny Hardaway. If I'm missing something, I'm sure someone can enlighten me in the comments section.

Here are just some of the reasons why this is so important to the Tigers:

Nice work as usual Andy, thanks...now lets get Black as well.
As always Andy, great article! :ncaabbs:
Great read Andy.
Go Tigers!!!!
Love the Crazy Eyes on Phil..so, funny.
Thanks Andy. Great article as always.
Triple A, I agree with the 10 reasons concerning Joe J. When taken in context with the Will Barton commitment however, this sends shock waves nationally. Joe is the inside piece and his commitment alone would have put Memphis back to the elite recruiting level. You add this to the Bartons (the outside piece) and Memphis is back to being the Monster in the corner they can't ignore.

This has been one H*ll of a year so far. If this season is anything like the off season, Look out!!!
And now.. Starting for the Tigers....

At guard... #1...Jukin Joe Jacksonnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.
I concur indubitably AAA.
Really enjoyed that Andy. I remember the Hardaway announcement day like it was yesterday, and I agree with you 100%.

The Hardaway thing was as big as it gets, especially since many expected him to commit to the Hogs right up until the minute he announced for us.
Andy, I could not agree more with your 10 reasons.

I have heard, read and endured UK’s perception that winning championship was a birthright and so much part of their history. Other programs have as well echoed their history too gives them the right to lift their noses in the air.

The signing of Joe Jackson marks a forward momentum this program has established over the last decade. Losing a coach along with a star studded recruiting class did not define what was to become of the program. The very essence of how the Tiger program recouped after adversity shows how strong the foundation is with Tiger Basketball.

The height of our noses will not be the benchmark of our success. Our success will come from all things positive and Josh will be at that foundation.
GREAT WORK !!!

Amen Fourple. I'm really excited. I must say though, I think we're going to make a lot of noise this year too. It's good to be a Tiger.

You are correct. I tried to say that in Reason #1, but you said it much better. Thanks.

I concur. I did not mean to belittle our team for this season. We will probably win C-USA and likely go to the Dance, so it won't be shabby. It's just that the prospects of what Josh is putting together in his first full recruiting season is mindboggling.
Well done, as always. If we do indeed land a top 5 recruiting class next year, somehow it will seem sweeter with JP as our coach than it ever did with X.
Josh Pastner is the truth.
Lorenzen Wright, Deuce Ford and Paris London's signings were big deals at the time, because all were nationally ranked. JJ's commitment is more exciting, though, because he's the shining example of a lead guard who - in the last years under Larry, and definitely during the Tic and Cal periods - probably would have went to UT or Arkansas or Tech or somewhere weird. JJ will be able to effect the game in so many ways for the Tiger program because he'll have the ball in his hands. It's been a LONG time since the Tigers signed a great local PG out of h.s. (with no disrespect to Chris Garner, but the last great one was Elliot Perry).
Quite frankly, I am giddy with excitement!
Thanks Andy. As usual, you hit the nail with your head. There's nothing of significance I could add to the 10.

With reference to #4, Tarik Black. Why does Rivals have him as a 6'7" Center? Obviously, I haven't been in Memphis to see him go, but am trying to remember when I've seen someone play post up for a nationally ranked top 50 at that height. Is he that much of a physical presence?

Somewhere, out there, remains a Memphis unfinished symphony. I remain convinced that one of these cycles and times, there will come a convergence of resolve, talent and commitment on the part of both young players and coaching staff, when a final championship will be orchestrated, sustained and competed all the way to the standing ovation. Maybe 2010 will be it. Regardless, it will happen. I take issue with the "we ain't goin' nowhere". I think, one day, we'll finally go all the way.
