Arkansas' Fortson may be disciplined over Tweet

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A spokesman says a University of Arkansas basketball player may be disciplined over a crass comment posted on the Internet as police investigated his teammates after a female student claimed she was raped at a party.

Athletic department spokesman Kevin Trainor said Thursday that officials were aware of the statement point guard Courtney Fortson made on Twitter.

Fortson wasn't named in the rape complaint. He made the comment Monday, two days before news of the investigation became public.

Fortson wrote: "Im gettin it at workouts like a dude who doesnt understand the word no from a drunk girl lol."
Prosecutors said Wednesday they wouldn't charge the three basketball players accused by the 18-year-old. A lawyer for the woman says she stands by the allegations.

It's a sad world when a player's "tweet" may get him in more trouble than 3 players messing with a drunk 18 year old.

I my be being naive about this, but I think there will be some serious punishment for the players involved. Unfortunately, Fortson's comment just shows more of the character, or lack thereof, of the athletes that are being recruited in the Northwest part of this State.

Unlike Dr. J, I do not believe that this matter is "closed" by any means.

I have no idea whether the case is closed. All I heard was that the charges were dropped. Maybe something else will be discovered that could reopen the investigation. You could very well be right. It might not be over. But in any event, it's certainly not something you want to happen in your basketball program.04-rock

The point is that although there may be no criminal charges forthcoming from the PA's office up there, this matter is not over from a bad PR perspective for the Chickenhawg program, to discipline from Pelphrey, to a possible civil action by the girl, etc. That's what I mean when I say this matter is not "closed".

Could his comment fall in the category of "new evidence" for the prosecutor? Certainly sounds like he had an opinion on what happened. Whether that's based on factual information, who knows.
Sounds like workouts have intensified since The Incident. Not sure why that would be "new evidence".

Whether this would constitute "new evidence" I don't know. But it certainly indicates that Fortson thought he was getting the intensified workouts because of teammates that didn't know what "no" meant from drunk girl. That should probably at least warrant a followup from the PA. And it certainly doesn't reflect well on Fortson or his teammates.

It does indicate that Mr. Fortson knows the definition of rape. Whether he really thinks what happened met that definition, who knows.
