Dr. James Kirklin, following in the footsteps of his father, has been named the new division director of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery within the University of Alabama at Birmingham's department of surgery. The appointment is effective July 1.

Kirklin will succeed Dr. Albert Pacifico, who announced in November that he would retire June 30.

Kirklin is the son of the late Dr. John Kirklin, who joined UAB in 1966 as chairman of the department of surgery and surgeon-in-chief for UAB Hospital. The elder Kirklin was widely credited with revolutionizing cardiovascular surgery through his development and refinement of the heart-lung machine.

For his part, the younger Dr. Kirklin spearheaded the UAB Heart and Lung Transplant Program, establishing it as one of the leading heart-lung transplant programs in the world.
