St. X QB Massa back on track after breaking collarbone in '08

By Tom Ramstetter • tramstetter@enquirer.com • August 17, 2009

The Enquirer's high school football preview comes out in print on Thursday. Each day this week leading up to its publishing, we will feature some of the content provided.

A year ago, St. Xavier quarterback Luke Massa was coming off a football state championship season with high hopes of a repeat performance.

As a sophomore in 2007, he had gone 7-0 at quarterback after then-senior starter John Hurley suffered a knee injury, and Massa led the Bombers to their second Division I state title in three years.

But Massa suffered a fate similar to Hurley's in Week 5 last season when he broke his left collarbone diving out of bounds during the Bombers' 17-6 loss at Louisville Trinity. He then missed the rest of the season. St. X had won three straight games after falling to Colerain in the opener, in which Massa did not play, but the season spiraled down from there and the Bombers finished 4-6 (0-3 Greater Catholic League South).

Now Massa, who has orally committed to the University of Cincinnati, is back under center, and the senior again has high hopes for his final season in a Bombers uniform.

He was able to play basketball for the Bombers last winter, so there should be no question about his health.

"I'm fully recovered," Massa said. "It's my left shoulder, so it has nothing to do with me throwing. And my foot is fully healed, so I feel really healthy right now."

Massa had broken his right foot playing basketball his sophomore year and had surgery. He later tore some scar tissue, causing him to miss the Bombers' football opener.

After a last-place finish in the GCL South, Massa's Bombers aren't being mentioned as a favorite in the league in 2009. Elder reached the Division I state final last year, and Moeller is expected to challenge the Panthers for the league title.

"It's definitely a change for St. X, but we kind of like it, just because every year we usually have a ton of pressure on us," Massa said. "This year we can go out and we won't be the team that's nervous like Colerain and Moeller and all them that are expected to win. That's kind of a good feeling."

It's a feeling that could help the Bombers surprise some teams.

"I think it's going to give X a lot more confidence," Moeller coach John Rodenberg said. "I think X is definitely playing with a chip on its shoulder. They didn't have the season they wanted to have last year and he (Massa) was hurt, so I think he brings a ton of confidence to their team. Then with having kind of a chip on their shoulder, with not having been as successful as they usually are, it will be a tough situation for anybody who plays them."

Massa agrees about the chip. He also said he knows he must be more of a leader this season and that his ability to bounce back and play at the level he did as a sophomore will be key to the Bombers' fortunes.

Massa said he's not afraid of the first hit he'll take this season.

On the contrary, he and his teammates are raring to get on the field Aug. 28 against Colerain in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown at Nippert Stadium.

"Over the summer, we've had a lot better focus in the weight room and workouts," he said. "Everyone has kind of a bad taste in their mouth from last year, and we just want to prove to everyone that the Bombers will be back this year."

Quote:Metal health

Luke Massa's body has been through a lot in the past two years, but one thing it might not make it through is a metal detector.

After breaking his collarbone last season, Massa had his upper body somewhat reconstructed.

"I have a metal bar in there, so I don't think anything is going to happen," the quarterback said. "I had the metal bar put in my body, and there were a total of eight screws put in. After that, I was in a sling for five weeks. I was good to go after that."
The last QB we had that was half metal turned out pretty good.

James has been hurt and with held from contact but is cleared to start hitting today. I was at the St X scrimmage last weekend, they definitely have some players but a lot of holes as well. I think they finish 3rd in the GCL this year.
St X definitely has some standouts on this year's team (James, Massa, Muhammed, Daniels). The problem for them is quality depth and finding 22 quality starters. Their Top 4-5 guys are as good as anyone in the city or state. It is after that where there is a sizeable dropoff. Not typical of St X.

What is your take on LaSalle? Improved?
I know they are making a big fuss about beating Princeton 24-8 in a scrimmage but I have Princeton near the bottom of the GMC. Outside of Ware they have absolutely nothing. Their junior and senior classes have always been really bad.

I agree with your assessment of Princeton. I think LaSalle will be improved but I dont know if they can beat St X this year. I see the GCL as Elder, Moeller, St X and LaSalle.

The Leadership scholarships and SWS have really helped the program.

James's body and body type are ideal. He is a massive guy, but naturally so. He looks like a large athlete not a guy just carrying a bunch of extra pounds like so many OL. So much upside and room for power development on that frame.

I am sure our strength coaches would be wearing shed eating grins if they get the chance to get him in the program.

He has "monster" D1 lineman written all over him.
X looked very, very good offensively Friday night versus Hamilton. Massa was very sharp. Defensively X struggled which is very uncharacteristic of a Coach Specht led team.
Someone told me the St X - Hamilton scrimmage was 28-21 St X. Does that sound about right?

Other scrimmage scores in the GCL.

Big Blue battles back vs. Bombers

By Jay Morrison, Staff Writer 12:31 AM Saturday, August 22, 2009

CINCINNATI — The Hamilton High School football players didn’t come ready to play against St. Xavier, and they knew it.

But they also did something about it.

After falling behind 21-0 a little more than 13 minutes into the game, Big Blue reeled off 20 unanswered points and stayed right with the Bombers the rest of the way before falling 28-20 in their final scrimmage Friday night, Aug. 21, at Ballaban Stadium.

“Our kids were just tight to start,” HHS coach Jim Place said. “We only start four seniors, and it was just like everyone was looking at each like, ‘What are we doing here?’ ”

The Bombers scored touchdowns on their first three possessions, while Big Blue managed just one first down on their first three series. But the game turned when Cody Vinson recovered a fumbled punt return at the St. Xavier 32-yard line.

One play later, Devin Jarrett was in the end zone to start what would be an impressive night for the junior running back. Jarrett finished with 137 yards on 20 carries, and junior Chris Tarrant added 42 yards and a touchdown.

“Boy, those two backs, you’re not going to find a better pair of running backs anywhere around,” St. Xavier coach Steve Specht said. “You might find a few teams with as good a running backs, but not better. Those two kids run hard, and they’re tough to bring down.”

The success on the ground helped open the passing attack, as quarterback Drew Townsend completed 7-of-19 passes for 119 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown strike to Brian Cleckley on the final play of the first half.

“I under-threw him on that ball, and he made a (heck) of a catch,” Townsend said. “If I can just get the ball to the playmakers, they can do the rest. We’ve got a lot of players who are really good. I’ve just got to get the ball to them.”

The Hamilton defense only gave up 80 yards of total offense in the second half, 35 of which came on one long run by Conor Hundley, who finished with 132 yards.

“I love scrimmaging Jim Place because he gets it, and we’re on the same page with what we want to accomplish,” Specht said. “And the thing I love about Hamilton kids is, they’re gonna hit you in the mouth and play hard. And they always have speed. And opening against Colerain, we need to see as much speed as we can.”

At the conclusion of the game, the two teams played an overtime period, which Big Blue won 7-6. St. Xavier went first and scored, but Todd Dockery blocked the extra point. Hamilton then drove in for a 1-yard touchdown by Townsend, and Chelub Davenport booted the PAT.

The story CTipton posted not withstanding St X was running away with the scrimmage, scrimmages for most HS programs is about developing talent and the 2 deep chart. There is only one major HS in Cincinnati I know that plays scrimmages to win.

That said I also expect the GCL to be Elder, Moeller, St X and then LaSalle.
I think the most interesting scrimmage over the weekend had to be the Harrison v McNick scrimmage at Harrison

That is the absolute truth! And it is very easy to figure out who it is.

No sh!t. My roommate is good buddies with one of the JTM kids. Heard about the wreck while attending Ribberfest in Madison, IN. Didn't know it was during the game until last night. Crazy stuff. Lots of speculation apparently.
