Heat alert declared for weekend
The Enquirer • August 7, 2009

For the first time since late June, it might actually feel like summer this weekend.

Cincinnatians can get reacquainted with much-neglected pools as temperatures are expected to reach the upper 80s and low 90s. In fact, it will get so warm Cincinnati health officials have declared an extended heat alert through Monday.

A heat alert means children, elderly residents and those with chronic illnesses are at a higher risk for heat exhaustion. They are reminded to limit outdoor activity and drink plenty of fluids. Residents should also make sure pets have shade and plenty of water.

Warmer air is sweeping in from the Gulf Coast states, said Jeff Sites, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wilmington.
That’s a change from last month, which averaged about six degrees cooler than normal, making it the coolest July on record.

Meteorologists blame it on a low-pressure system that hovered over the eastern half of the country, pulling in cool air from Canada.
This weekend’s high temperatures will be slightly warmer than the normal high of 86 for this time of the year. It will likely hit 92 degrees by Sunday, with plenty of sunshine.

The rest of the week will stay warm as well, with highs in the upper 80s, although there will be a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms on Monday and Wednesday.

In Cincinnati, city recreation centers will be open as cool centers. Visit http://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/crc/pages/-5672-/ for a list of cool center sites.
