The key is Grandma:
Quote:As the days go by, however, the pressure on Jackson to pull the trigger will only grow inside his hometown. With such a high profile already in Memphis thanks to the publicity given to his recruitment over the last year Jackson said he hears “all day” that he needs to play for the Tigers, escaping constant recruitment only when he’s at home with his grandmother Lillie Cox.

Even she, however, seems to be working in concert with Pastner to keep Jackson in Memphis.

“She just wants me to go where I’m happy,” Jackson said regarding his grandmother and guardian, Lillie Cox. “But she talks to Josh a lot, like, a lot. Sometimes when I don’t even know about it, so they’ve got a good relationship.”

love that the article is all about how hard josh is pushing yet the kns throws that "Guard says UT still on list" deck in there...
Quote:Memphis coach Josh Pastner understands the urgency of getting Jackson, who is ranked 18th nationally by Rivals.com. After watching a half Wednesday of top Baltimore point guard Josh Selby, who is now on the market after de-committing from Tennessee, Pastner made an early exit Wednesday afternoon so that he could be the first coach at Jackson’s game.

Translation? Even though he’s in no hurry to decide, the Tigers aren’t changing their stance about Jackson as their top target to join Will Barton and Antonio Barton in the 2010 recruiting class.

“That’s all he’s been preaching since he got to Memphis, even when he was an assistant coach, that I’m the No. 1 guy,” Jackson said. “He’s relentless. He doesn’t give up. He wants you to commit right on the spot every time he talks to you. That’s how he is. I’m just speechless because he wants me so bad. He comes harder than anybody.”

pastner is superman.
Knoxville paper's deadline came before Memphis due to time zones. That's why it was posted first there.

Nice deductive reasoning.

I forget who... but i heard somebody being interviewed about Football recruiting on the radio yesterday, i think... and they were comparing the styles of Nick Saban versus Urban Meyer. The question was asked if you were a mid level college like a Minnesota or something, and could have either coach... which would you choose...? Well the "expert" in the interview (not sure who now) said he would pick Saban because there is nobody in the business that spends more time figuring out who the "trigger man" is for a recruit and causing that person to fall in love with them. And THAT is the key to landing elite recruites year in and year out.

Anyway, reading this article and hearing about how Josh is developing his relationship with Joe's grandma... after hearing that interview... Makes Me Smile!

Couldn't Grandma come on as a personal trainer or something?
Rivals Jerry Meyer in Weekly Mailbag:

Good piece on Jelan Kendrick and talks about JJ and Selby too.

What do you think are the chances that Josh Selby or Joe Jackson will suit up for the Memphis Tigers in 2010?

I think the odds are very high that Jackson stays home and plays for Memphis, and the odds are high that Selby ends up at Kentucky. Just the strong possibility of Selby going to Kentucky helps Memphis with Jackson.

Does anyone have a schedule for Joe's games this week? I know I'll have plenty of time this weekend but I'd like to slip away for a couple hours to see him today or tomorrow. Is Adonis Thomas here? I'd like to see some of the other guys as well as Pastner and Wolken. Last year I caught Josh and Slime at Foothills High School. That seems to be the main venue every year.

Thanks in advance.

I got a kick out of the article Wolken wrote about our rent-a-car complex. My business is just two blocks away. That place is like a shopping mall. I avoid it like the plague. It's a real pleasure driving to work every day trying to avoid lost and confused drivers in their rentals. 03-banghead

I would love to have JJ or Selby. They're both solid, even though my preference would be to have JJ simply b/c the hometown connection.

UK is listed as strong possibles for Knight, Selby, and will have Bledsoe back. Seriously, do the Wildcats play with 2 balls in the games? 3?
adonis thomas plays for memphis magic with jj, tarik black, and chris crawford
What if Calipari tells Selby not to commit until after Joe signs, then we have another Bledsoe situation. Calipari is really good at playing this recruiting situations to his advantage. Pastner should push for a commit from a PG before the college basketball season begins. If Joe is slightly interested in Kentucky having them on national TV twice a week is not going to help our cause. Also if Kentucky makes a deep tournament run and ends up with 3 lottery picks, I don't like our chances. I am a big Joe Jackson fan I try to make all of the games that he is playing in, but waiting on him to commit could put the Tigers in a really bad situation.
The kid is waiting to see if CJP can coach. Period.
He's also waiting to see what teammates he will have.
