This just came up on ESPN. According to one of Latavious' consultants it was about the money.

Nope
Who knows what the real reason is. I wonder what would happen if he were to gain eligibility in the next week or two...just a thought since he had supposedly applied for eligibility

If you are not going to qualify academically and have no desire to go to college, is anyone really surprised by this after Brandon Jennings last year with the University of Arizona? I hope this is not a flood of recruits doing this, because going overseas will hurt college basketball immensely.

I don't think teams overseas will continue to do this. Most fans over there have little knowledge of any of the HS players over here. The teams don't want to invest into a player that no one has heard of for a year before he bolts for the NBA. The investment is just too great for them and the players limited exposure may hurt him more than help. Jennings was an exception, so a few might get away with it - but the majority will not. LW is making a bad choice if its for money....but as others have said - its probably more about academics.
Save this article for the next time an opposing fan says memphis pays it players. Apparently, we dont.
Someone already made a comment on the espn comment page saying he was leaving because we don't pay players anymore because Calipari is gone.
I love it...."seldom used reserve Pierre Niles"..when he going to get pissed and commit to the program?
It is NOT about the money. As a matter of fact, name one U.S. kid who has gone overseas AFTER he qualified to play in college.

Correction: It IS about the money for Godfrey, who stands to make some if he is Latavious' travel partner in China.

No need to sweat over a clearinghouse decision now:muttering:... 7 schollies are available for next year....
Barton, Barton, Jackson, Kendricks, T Harris, Black and Prather or Hollis
Maybe it's not about the money. Maybe it's the promise of being fed tasty Chinese fish and fish by-products for every meal.

if he has released a statement and is not actually enrolling, then the eligibility center probably would just drop it right there. they could come back to it if he changed his mind, if he was still amateur.

the smart money says that by the time that statement was released, he was no longer amateur.

it still would seem to be academic, because China does not seem like a great situation to develop for the NBA - Chinese players who get drafted are typically over 7 feet, and they haven't all panned out skill-wise. exposure will be limited to say the least, not to mention the culture shock. I doubt he had many options. too bad it came to that, hope it works out for him.
It's all about the grades, IMO.
Either you're with us OR against US !!!
Nuff said!!!
Interesting that the he is listed on the Tiger roster for next year, guess its not official yet.

I honestly believe that most of that crap will no longer be mentioned with the coaching change. Memphis may not be at the top of the mountain like in years past, so we will not get as much attention, but I think we will see a much more positive media outlook/attitude towards us in the coming years.

Much of the perceived disrespect/"haters" could have been more directed at the coach and not Memphis.
