Iran Could Have Atomic Bomb Within 6 Months: German Intel

BERLIN -- Germany's BND foreign intelligence agency believes Iran is capable of producing and testing an atomic bomb within six months, much sooner than most analysts estimate, according to a report in German weekly Stern.


The report, which quotes BND experts, says the agency has information supporting the view that Iran has mastered the enrichment technology necessary to make a bomb and has enough centrifuges to make weaponized uranium.


"If they wanted to, they could detonate an atomic bomb in half a year's time," the story quoted a BND expert as saying.


The BND did not return two calls from Reuters seeking comment on the report.


Iran says its nuclear program is for electricity generation to help it export more of its oil and gas, but Western countries suspect it of trying to pursue a nuclear bomb.


The U.N. Security Council has imposed three sets of sanctions on Tehran for defying its demands to suspend uranium enrichment.


Some analysts say Iran may be close to having the required material for producing a bomb, but most say the weaponization process would then take one to two years due to technical and political hurdles.


"Weaponizing" enrichment would not escape the notice of U.N. nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), unless it was done at a secret location.


Until now there have been no indications of any such covert diversion, a point made by the IAEA's incoming director-general shortly after his election earlier this month.


Current IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei has said it is his "gut feeling" that Iran is seeking at least the capability to build nuclear weapons, in order to protect itself from perceived regional and U.S. threats.

If the Iranians really wanted to stir things up, they would just "borrow" a North Korean nuclear bomb, detonate it, and claim "we are a nuclear power too."

The NK and Iranian weapons are jointly develeoped anyway.

While he shares the views and values of Jimmy Carter, this isn't all Obama's fault, Carter was the point of no return. He empowered the Mullahs in Iran, and he and Clinton gave Nukes to the NoKo's which was the point of no return there. Unless we are willing to take the chance that NoKo will Nuke Seol, a mere 30 minutes away in response to any attack, military action is off the table and they know it. Not to say we can't do some other things though.

Fixed better.

For those who suffer the same cognitive dissonance as me - Lawrence Eagleburger was Sec of State under GHW Bush. Sandy Berger was National Security Advisor for Clinton (the one with testicles ... check that - the one who likes women ... check that ... oh never mind).

I wonder what it's going to take for Europe and Russia to do something about Iran? Maybe when Israel glows in the dark will people get the message.

Israel has taken out 2 nuclear facilities, Syria and Iraq. When the world did nothing, Israel acted.

And that is how it should be....Those that are directly threatened should act. I would certainly say that the Israelis have a case for interdiction. The foolish leadership in Iran has made numerous direct threats to Israels security. They are playing a dangerous game that will end badly for them.
