Quote:Former Winter Park standout receiver commits to UAB

Darnell Williams, who starred for Winter Park after moving to Central Florida following Hurricane Katrina for his senior year, has committed to UAB.

Williams (6-2/200) caught 36 passes for 474 yards last fall at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas. He originally signed out of high school with UCF.

When will he be on the field for UAB?
2010
Welcome to the team!
I talked to a buddy on Florida that follows recruiting and he told me this was a very good pickup for UAB and that several BCS schools were after him out of high school. While true he ended up with UCF for various reasons, he was looked at by higher profile programs. Some may argue that he is not an in state guy but we have to sign the best players we can get. If they happen to be in state, so be it. If they are JUCOs so be it. Lord knows we don’t want a full roster of JUCOs but if we can land a quality guy like this one, we need to get him regardless of where he is from.

I am liking what I am seeing from this coaching staff regarding recruiting.
Yeah, like I mentioned in the other thread, he had offers from Nebraska, Ole Miss, Kentucky, and NC State out of HS, according to his 2007 Rivals page.
After the last few years, it is sooo great to have discussions about the nature of recruiting into the next decade rather than the old famliar refrains about the UAB program "going away". If things continue on the present staff's apparent direction, we will never hear that talk again. I, for one, won't miss it.
