Delaware looks like it would work as a football-only expansion, but adding them for all sports looks to drag the MAC down. WKU doesn't want to leave the Sun Belt. Army or Navy would be ideal, but they won't bring all sports. Northern Iowa would provide a great boost to athletics, but there's no media market. UMass seems like the best combination of athletics and media market.

WKU applied to the MAC just a couple of years ago and was almost accepted. If the MAC was looking that direction again I think WKU would still make the move, the MAC is light years ahead of the Sun Belt with its TV package that has a wide syndication.

Even in basketball, top to bottom MAC is better than the SBC. The Cleveland tourney is better than the productions they are putting on.

And how far is Cleveland from Bowling Green?
If the Sun Belt only consisted of two states and you threw the tournament in one of those two states, the tournament would be better attended. As it is, attendance in all sports is pretty much even between the two conferences.

For the most part, WKU fans have no interest in playing northern schools, and the MAC offers WKU very little. The MAC wouldn't make WKU any better in basketball. It wouldn't make WKU any better in football — actually it might hurt them in recruiting TN, GA, FL players — and it would definitely hurt them in non-revenue sports (baseball, especially).

So, from your standpoint, WKU would help the MAC (primarily in bball). However the MAC wouldn't help WKU.
The Sporting News rankings of the 120 1-A teams lists Western Kentucky last at #120. How could being in the MAC not help thier football program?

Cleveland tourney would be an easy drive for WKU alumni living in Northern Kentucky and Louisville.

You have to consider where the alumni base is. One of the primary reasons Marshall moved to CUSA was that its alumni base is by and large in the south with it being particularly strong in North Carolina.

That's what I was thinking. The 120th ranked football team in every poll/preview is the last thing the MAC needs at this point.
