And she is a good one.

Mariah Carson, a 6-2 power forward from Detroit Southeastern High School has agreed to bring her basketball skills to UT and become a Rocket. Carson, who will be a senior this fall, averaged 21,8 points, 14.6 rebounds, and 5.6 steals last season.

Maureen Fulton has the Carson story in the printed version of today's Blade, but it hasn't yet been added to the cyber site.

I'm already picturing a front line of Yolanda Richardson and Carson dominating the Savage Arena glass.

It isn't written in stone yet but the women could be opening the 2009-10 season with a home game against the Big-10's Northwestern.

She fell in love with the facilities and the coaching staff... A very good addition to the program...

Like I told Fred a few weeks ago at the FTC groundbreaking... "It's a great day to be a Rocket"

o$u= the walmart of higher education
"Like I told Fred a few weeks ago at the FTC groundbreaking... "It's a great day to be a Rocket"

And you were right!
She will be a senior this fall . . . any chance she could grow a few more inches?!?!?
Creating controversy:

Has this been confirmed by the university or was this submitted by the coach?

Anyone else have ANY further information on this player?

Something about the coaches comment had me wondering. Indiana and Minn?

Mariah Carson made honorable mention Detroit, did not make the metro team. Those are rather high stats for an "honorable mention."

Searched for the coach and Ferris (St. university) and found a couple interesting things.

hmmm, I think I'll wait for official comment. Player has nice size and if the stats hold up, that 5.6 steals looks most impressive. Shows quicks and anticipation, knowledge of the game.

Thought the same thing. Universities can't comment this early. Usually the HS coach breaks the verbal news. How does a 6'2" player with 21, 14 and 5 steals a game get honorable mention? Unless she's an intramural player that seemed odd- especially whne her coach is calling her one of the best in the midwest or whatever.

You wont get any official comment until after the player signs her LOI, probably in November. I don't know why she didn't get higher post-season honors, but I do know that the staff is excited to have her on board.

If you want an up-close look at her, come to Savage Arena on Sunday morning for the Summer Slam. Her team is playing at 9:40 am.
We have a great coaching staff. I have no doubt she is a quality player and person.
From what I hear, she is the real deal.

Is there a schedule posted somewhere listing which teams are playing? Always in the lookout for local teams.

I would think there will be some very impressed young ladies, when they get a look at the remodeled Savage.

Regarding coaches commenting on recruits, here's the rule:

13.10.2 Comments Before Signing.

Before the signing of a prospective student-athlete to a National Letter of Intent or an institution's written offer of admission and/or financial aid, a member institution may comment publicly only to the extent of confirming its recruitment of the prospective student-athlete. The institution may not comment generally about the prospective student-athlete's ability or the contribution that the prospective student-athlete might make to the institution's team; further, the institution is precluded from commenting in any manner as to the likelihood of the prospective student-athlete's signing with that institution. Violations of this bylaw do not affect a prospective student-athlete's eligibility and are considered institutional violations per Constitution 2.8.1. (Revised: 1/14/97)

In other words, a coach CAN say that he is recruiting an athlete but may not get into specifics about the athletes' ability or likelihood attending the school. I think that coaches just say they can't comment because they don't want to comment.
It's very gray area for a coach to confirm a prospective student-athlete's name, therefore they say they cannot comment to error on the safe side. A coach from a BCS school recently mentioned a recruit's name on his twitter, without saying anything else about his abilities or anything, and the school ended up reporting it to the NCAA as a minor NCAA infraction.

It is always better to error on the cautious side and not say anything. You don't want the NCAA going into a debate on interpretation of that and other rules.
Remember she hasn't gotten offers from MSU or UM and they are in her back yard. I don't know how good the Detroit PSL is, but maybe these stats indicate not very. Also. have we heard about her grades and test scores. The one positive is her size, something we need badly, and if as athletic as stated, she will probably get better over the years. Still if eligible a great start for the 2010 class
Her comments on the article linked above, she seems like a nice kid, head on right and all that.

Mariah Carson and her family will definitely appreciate the better news coverage here of girls' and womens' bball, can't find barely anything in three on-line Detroit/Mich papers. As a soph, she played for Detroit Community, a public charter and one of the better teams in the state. So, she must have transfered to Southeastern, a Detroit Public, for her junior year.

As S-Rocket said, as far as finding under the radar talent, these coaches have a good track record. I've not concerns about academic or athletic skills, my concern was only was an offer actually made, and FredJay confirmed that for me.

Indiana offer trumps Michigan I would imagine. MSU got that 6'6" girl out of Detroit Country Day, where the pros send their kids (so I'm told). I'd say they're set in the F/C position.
From Brian's article

Quote:" . . . but for the most part [UT is] somewhere I can get a good education and get my degree."

Another reason Mariah likes Toledo is because of head coach Tricia Cullop. "She is an amazing coach. I know she will be on my head on and off the court, especially off the court. I like that."

I like her priorities!
I watched her play two of three total games on Sunday at Savage Arena - I'm told that she saved her best performance for the game I didn't get to see.

Mariah has excellent coordination and handles the ball well, both in the post and dribbling down the court after grabbing a rebound. She's not afraid to mix it up and either end of the floor and has a nice turnaround shot near the basket.

She has decent quickness and when running on the floor, she has a gait similar to Tanika Mays.

She was hampered somewhat by the inability of her teammates to get her the ball down low, but she was the best individual player in the shootout.

She should also be able to put on another 10 pounds of muscle without a problem before she suits up in the "midnight blue and gold."

Coach Cullop also had another post player on campus for an unofficial visit on Sunday.
