the modern form of soccer(i.e. the rules and how the game is setup) is alot different than the ancient versions. People have been kicking balls around for awhile, the point is the 19th century intellectual mind, in Britain in this case, invented how it is played today. Basically they made the game the 'most fun'

Same thing with Tennis, Swimming, Boxing, Baseball(American), American Football, Cricket...not to mention your big Card games.

so the point I was making here, is that even though the Mullah's hate us, or NoKo and are completely 180 degrees opposed to Western Civilization and the Intellectual framework that built it....one area they do allow interaction(and get enjoyment from it) is in the area of Culture, in this case sports.

That's well and fine until they shut off streaming capabilities. If they shut down text messages, it's also easy to shut down cell phone based streaming (unless it's wifi-assisted). I suspect most of the video you see has been downloaded to computers and sent via the internet. With the internet, there are myriad ways to bypass government restrictions, so it's either shut down all internet access nationwide, or risk information leaking.

You can upload the streaming video off of sat phones as well. Those are hard to jam.

Somehow I doubt the government can stay ahead of the free market in this venue....although this might be one of a very few things that the government would have the incentive to do. Hiding the truth is a government specialty.05-stirthepot

Sat phones are not ubiquitous like cell phones are. Unless there is something with advance planning, I don't think it's likely they'd be a serious factor.

Governments can shut down cell phone networks or parts thereof very quickly and have a great incentive to do so in cases like this. Of course, they can also track them, which gives them an to leave them on as well.

I'm not sure, but I would tend to doubt that satellite phones are commercially viable. I expect that a big part of the reason they exist is because of government subsidies and or patronage.

Well... it's not really is nothing surprising the the government has these abilities....It's ALL about control. They have it...we don't. One would think that this should be protected under freedom of speech...Oh well05-stirthepot

It's more about infrastructure and the fact that landline and cell phone communications are by necessity centralized (at least regionally, in the sense of central offices). If you had enough resources and whatever was necessary to order that certain services be shut down, you could shut down communications as well.
