I remember where I thought they were from. I have had this argument before. Help me settle it. Where were the Hillbillies from?
Arkansas.

I have no idea which town or anything, but I am sure it was from Arkansas.
Apparently that is a more complex question than I thought. From wiki:

"While Granny frequently mentioned that she was from Tennessee, the series never specified the state from which the Clampetts moved to California. However, they often referred to nearby towns such as Joplin, Branson, and Silver Dollar City, all of which are in southwest Missouri. Early episodes also contained several references to Eureka Springs, which is in northwest Arkansas."

From funtrivia.com

"Arkansas, right over the border from Silver Dollar City in Missouri. The old episodes mention three real Arkansas towns that are up the north part of the state; Timbo, Oxford, and Eureaka Springs."
Even more interesting.

John Wayne once made a cameo appearance on "The Beverly Hillbillies" (1962) and when asked how he wanted to be paid, replied, "Give me a fifth of bourbon - that'll square it."
I thought they were from Tennessee. I thought Buggtussell was in Tenn. I know that Sam Drucker lived in Petticoat Junction, or hooterville, or somewhere around those pretty chicks. I can remember hearing them say Silver Dollar City. But was pretty sure that Granny always claimed to be from Tennessee. I thought it would be easy to answer. I found out that no one really agrees. Knew that the Peoples forum collective brain trust could solve it.

I thought that Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, all those folks could be tied to the Hillbillies. Someone will find the real answer.
Oil Trough, TX

Oh nevermind, that was Dirty Dutch Mantell.
Granny was from the Smokey Mountains. I'm thinking they were from the East Tennessee hills.
They seemed to have moved during the show. At first it is clear they are from Ark but as the series went on they seemed to be from Tn. They even talked about going back to Tn in latter years. But what do you expect from Hollywood. All through the series they called the southern cross the stars and bars.
Hadn't really thought about it, so I didn't realize this was a more profound question than meets the eye. I'd always thought Granny was from TN. The "hills" often referred to could be just about anywhere. The following makes me think they were located in MO, until I read it was just "filmed" in Branson, MO, not actually IN MO.

"The Clampetts went back to the hills for Christmas during the first season but did not return there until the eighth season, during which several episodes were filmed on location at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri."

To me, "hills" suggests either East TN or beyond that somewhere. I'll be interested to know just where they were from, but I'd vote for East Tennessee.

While the exact location of Hooterviile was never told.(somewhere in the rural midwest i would guess) We do know from one episode that it was NOT in the south. After Bea's death an episode where Billie Jo's press agent was making a publicity picture of her being a southern Belle. When the then married Betty Jo stepped in and stated that Mom wouldn't have approved, that it was wrong because Billie Jo was NOT from the south. Although cousin Mae was from the south.
I thought they lived in Texas because of the "black gold -Texas tea" that "came up from the ground as bubbling crude" while Jeb was trying to keep his family fed.

I agree with everyone. I watched that show from day one. That's the reason that I asked it. I don't think there is a definitive answer. I have been by, and have the picture of the House that was used as the exterior. It's in Belair, not Beverly Hills. You can drive right by the front gate, and it's a lot closer to the gate than you would think. I don't think they ever really pinned down the actual locale. Although Jethrine, and Aunt Pearl live in Hooterville. They seemed to be friends of Sam Druckers. Hell, I thought all those Don Henning sit coms on CBS were all related.

My favorite Hillbilly's character was Sonny Drysdale. Oh step dad.

I have a buddy whose girlfriend treated his doberman, Spike, like a spoiled kid so he renamed the dog "Sonny" in honor of Sonny Drysdale.

That is funny as hell Southaven. I can see that as a great name for a spoiled dog. Louie Nye played Sonny Drysdale. Sonny cracked me up, "Oh step Dad".
