Let's offer them a spot at our 14th member, should they move up, before some other conference goes after them. I hate to see teams like UConn suddenly make the jump from 1-AA to BCS without first having to work their way up.
If Delaware, and about 29 other 1-AA teams move to 1-A, YSU might just crack the 1-AA Top 20 again?
Is their basketball program any good? If not then i wouldn't want them added. We shouldn't add members for the sake of balancing out divisions. We should add members who add value. Do they bring a big market?

They pretty much bring the entire state of Delaware which is much more of a market that most of the MAC has right now.

01-wingedeagle C'mon, are you kidding me?
actually Delaware would be a good long term fit for you guys
Coog: I'm not saying it wouldn't be a good fit. But to say that Delaware brings much more of a market than most of the MAC has right now is questionable.

I never said that, someone else did. I suppose they have a decent market.

The MAC has markets like Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Detroit, etc. The state of Delaware in its entirety doesn't even compare to those.

I doubt even half of the people in Delaware care about Delaware athletics. That's not much when you're talking about the 45th largest state with a population under 900k.
Adding them as a football-only member could be an option. We already have that with Temple, so why not do it again to balance things out?

They would help bring in more of the Philly market and they would give Temple a true natural rival.
It is several Temple folks belief they are better suited to skip us and go straight to a big east split and join a new big east. They just hired away a big east basketball coach and are spending money.
If they're holding out for a Big East breakup, they'll go bankrupt spending money like that until it happens.

They're part of the Colonial league in basketball, which is a pretty decent mid-major conference. They probably view MAC basketball (especially the West) as a step down. Still, if they want to show the Big East that they're ready for that level of competition they will need to step it up and join a 1-A conference.

Problem is that there is never going to be a Big east split nor was it ever a possibility. Delaware would probably join the MAC id they wanted to move up and if you would take them.

The collective wisdom is there will be, i've actually never heard that it would never happen nor is it not a possibility, the whole league was reduced to 5 members just a few years ago.... and its more and more obvious Delaware is positioning itself to skip over the MAC ... Its a shame they never having to deal with all you great MAC fans

Never been to Delaware, have you. Most of Delaware is farmland. In land area it is the 49th state in size. In population it is 45th. Outside of Wilmington, a suburb of Philadelphia, there is only Dover (pop. 35,000) and a lot of beach resorts.

UD shares the state's sports market with FCS Delaware State and the schools in Maryland and eastern Pennsylvania. Delaware sports has no following in neighboring Maryland, I know, I've lived there.

There is an extensive thread on AGS about the new AD and the football program.

UD is the ohio state of Delaware... with a similar following on a scale of about 1/20th that of OSU. not really a farm state IMHO
I like Delaware.... good school..... some history (football) ..... fits in well w/ Temple & UB......
Schools like Delaware and Temple need to keep dreaming about the Big East splitting up.

There is no reason for the breakup to happen. The current Big East already has an auto-bid and the football members are making a ton of money off the non-football members from NCAA Bball units. Big East has claim to being the best bball conference. I don't see the football schools throwing away a good thing all for the sake of adding one more team to balance out scheduling.

Besides, if the football schools in the BE are going to invite anyone in its going to be ECU and UCF over Temple or Delaware. Temple has a bad history in 1-A and Delaware has no history. ECU and UCF are averaging over 40k in attendance and Delaware keeps on acknowledging how great getting 22k is and Temple wishes it could average 22k.
As far as a Big East breakup happening, nothing will happen unless another conference makes a move first. They have a deadlock right now between football and basketball schools, and there are mor votes opposing adding a football-only member than there are for adding one.

The more I think about it, the more it seems likely that any conference shift will start out west involving the MWC or WAC.
I prefer UMass over UD because they'll help us more in basketball but if the MAC made them the 14th I'd be fine with it because of their overall university profile.
