May be the most missed coach on our staff. Recruited Florida better than any coach we ever had. I don't think the UCF thing would have went down had McDonald been down there.
UCF who?
Um....make that FUC. Now we all know who we're talking about. 03-lmfao
He was in DeKalb good coach... He will be a HC in the NOT too distant future.
I dunno....hard to go from NFL assistant to D-I header...Brewster (Minnesota) may be making it even harder.

Fairchild?? Colorado St. from Buffalo..... Rick N. UCLA from Redskins.... it can happen and it should be easier to go from NFL to non BCS then directly to BCS. I forgot Tom Coughlin did it when he was an assistant to Parcells before accepting the BC job and lets NOT forget the fatman himself Charlie Weis. (the fatman doesn't help my argument, does it?) oh well.....

Every one you mentioned is an alum (Fairchild, Neuheisel, Front Butt), and/or was a coordinator in The League, was college HC (Slick Rick) previously or had some tie to school (Coughlin was Doug Flutie's position coach at BC). Also Doug Malone (former Saints, now Syracuse).

McDonald currently doesn't have any of that going for him so unless he replaces The Zooker at Illinois he'll need to add some to his resume - which of course could happen.

Colleges just don't often hire NFL position coaches to be their headers. They hire NFL head guys (Saban, ex.) or coordinators who know something about the school.
I think this is just one more step on the way up the ladder for him. I think it is clear that he is headed towards being a HC at some point, and this stop will look great on his resume, but he'll have a few more stops on the way. He's a solid coach and a strong recruiter that'll make a very good HC someday.

Ahem. Kirk Ferentz.

I thought Saban was hired by Toledo as HC from a pro position coach.
Harumph. Ferentz had been head coach at Maine and assisted Fry before that, Whinny.

Saban had been DC at Michigan State under Perles, two years DB coach with Oilers before Toledo. Although he had no direct ties to UT he played and coached at Kent State, assisted Earle Bruce at Ohio State before going to MSU.

Like I said, been a coordinator or HC previously, ties to the school etc. besides being NFL position coach.

I've been coaching 34 years, including six at college level. I know (a little) whereof I speak on this subject.
