Chesney Matthews appears in scene with movie's biggest stars

Chesney Matthews' dream is to dance in front of thousands of people. She never imagined she'd end up in a movie with singer/actress Miley Cyrus, famed model Tyra Banks and actress Vanessa Williams.

But that's exactly what happened. The 22-year-old Sparkman High School graduate went to an audition last year in Nashville with thousands of other girls, mostly in the 5- to 10-year-old range, and landed a part as a featured extra in the hit "Hannah Montana: The Movie." She's also in the trailer for the movie....

Oddly enough, she never did any theater at Sparkman. Dance, instead, has been her passion since she was 3 years old. She trained at the North Alabama Dance Center and performed on Sparkman's dance team four years. She attended the University of Alabama in Birmingham the last three years, where she also performed on the UAB Golden Girls dance team.

Imagine a 22-year-old standing in line for three hours at Nashville's Sommet Center with hundreds of other 5- and 10-year-old "Hannah Montana" fans.

"It was pretty ridiculous," Matthews said. "But we drove two hours and thought, 'Why not?' I didn't really know what to expect. All we had to do was turn in a head shot and form."

Producers of the movie spotted Matthews, pulled her out of line and took her information. Obviously, she had that something they were looking for and got the extra role.

"I think I was just lucky," Matthews says modestly.

Lucky? Since the movie, she's also been in country singer Dierks Bentley's video for "Sideways," appeared on the Country Music Association Awards show with Alan Jackson as a line dancer and left Tuesday for another featured extra role in a movie filming in Atlanta.

She was the one with two-tone, large hair last year. She wasn't on the Golden Girls this year.

She sometimes would have her hair all teased up in a very awesome two toned afro that rocked!

That's great! The girl is lovely, vivacious and obviously has ambition, too.

The UAB Golden Girls are exceptionally lovely women by ANY standard and outstanding representatives of our university. If our AD and basketball coach had the ability of Ms. Matthews to actually follow through on ambition and refuse to settle, we all be much happier campers.
