Scott Drew sent out a press release early Saturday evening saying he is remaining at Baylor. Drew was rumored to be the top candidate at Memphis to replace John Calipari.
I would not leave a Big Twelve job to go to Memphis. Baylor lets you stay forever and Memphis you last 2 years with the same players and results......
I think your post about go after an assistant is right on. No BCS coach is going to a mid-major.

Now they're talking on the Memphis board that this has all been a smoke screen and they are about to bring in a "wow" hire- they're suggesting it my be Rick Pitino. They seem to be the most delusional bunch I've ever seen. I guess it's possible, who they get with their multiple million dollar offer will surprise me, but I don't see it. It does appear that there are some super wealthy backers (i.e. Fedex) who see this as do or die for the Memphis program. Either they score a home run hire and continue were Calipari left off or they go back to being a midmajor. These backers see the pride and even the economic well being of the city as being tied to a strong Tiger basketball program (especially because the Grizzlies are awful).
Mark Few (sp?)? That would be about the best mid-major coach out there but he has turned down better jobs than Memphis. Altman? He turned down a lateral move to U of A which is a step down from Memphis so he will take the job in Memphis

Sorry Scotto, I had to pick on you for a second. So, Altan would not come. Majarus? He ain't coming. Who is left that works for ESPN etc? I just don't see any big names out there.

The only guy i can come up with that they would have a shot at would be Jarvis from FAU.
No problem. Altman couldn't beat UALR this year, nor a weak Kentucky on their own floor, in front of 16,000. Altman needs to stay put.

I suspect Memphis is wishing they could jump ship on CUSA. I have no idea where they'd go. But clearly playing in that league effects their ability to get a "wow" coach.

There is no doubt that even with all their support, success, the FedEx Forum, etc., being in the CUSA instead of a BCS conference is hurting Memphis. They really wanted to be included in the Big East expansion a few years ago and were turned down. They really have no where to go so the best they can hope for is to land another talented coach who can dominate their league the way Calipari did.

It really demonstrates to me the inequity of how college athletics is currently set up. No matter how successful a program is, unless you are part of the exclusive club (ie-BCS), you are discriminated against. If college athletics was a regular business endeavor, the Justice Department would have initiated an Anti-Trust suit against the BCS a long time ago. That has been threatened in the past, and may happen some day, but don't hold your breath.

MJS- Could you provide a link to the Memphis board you have been reading? Thanks.
It's part of this board. Go to the top and select "conferences", go to "CUSA", etc.

There is some funny stuff there.

When you stop to think about it, top BCS programs paying BB coaches 3 to 4 Million per year, compare that to Shield's $125,000. Now that's a hell of a disparity. But, don't worry that will be corrected in time. To the extent you can believe anything he says, Baraco tells us his leadership is all about "Fairness and Leveling the playin field" As soon as he takes total control of auto, financial, insurance industries etc. the NCAA will be next. Maybe so-called mid-majors like us will get a stimulus deal, or Baraco will be setting salary scales for everyone. Everyone except those in D.C and NY.The sky is the limit for those priviledged folks.
If you don't mind, leave politics out of this. You REALLY don't want to go there.

If you don't mind, mind your own business. I don't know you but, who ever you are, I don't need you instructions re: what I can and cannot say on this board or elsewhere.
Actually, this board IS reserved for things sports related. There is an entire section called the Spin Room, located in the Lounge for those of you that want to slam our President. Politics is very polarizing. I think I'm right. You think you're right. That's how guys like you and guys like me can co-exist on one board, by not touching that 3rd rail.

And if you want to get into all the things our previous President did or did not do to screw up this country we can have that conversation in the Spin Room.

Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Purpose of my post was 2-fold. First to bring attention to difference in coach's compensation. Second(most important)was to see how many liberal democrats I coulds smoke out. 2 on this board is not bad.
No need to smoke me out. Darn proud to be a liberal. Never seen a tax increase I couldn't support. Hell, I even live in Hillcrest.

Any other questions..?

Since we are somehow talking politics, add me to the liberal Democrat list. I know that DI cancels my vote out, although I think even he had enough of the Bush years.

You're getting a little snippy there, aren't you Scotto? Can only liberals decide what is discussed here? Damn, cool off. Everyone's intitled to his or her opinion.
No, but slamming our President belongs in the Spin Room. That's why it exists.

Hell, I haven't even found that "quck reply" button, and I have no idea where the spin room is.
