He was best known for singing "Ol' Man River" at Memphis in May's Sunset Symphony.

RIP.....

I used to love to go hear him sing at the Sunset Symphony every year. Hear that and 1812 were always my favorite parts.
LEGEND
That just caps off a horrible week in Memphis.
Damn, a very good man.
wow this week was horrible
He was the VOICE of Memphis in May's Sunset Symphony. He will be missed.

That now makes 2 in 1 week. Don't disasters always come in 3s. What's Next???
LEGEND, hang his white jacket from the Sunset Symphony rafters.
He was wonderful.
Big loss for the city. What a way to end MIM every year.
I wish there were good recordings of his symphony performances on the net.
Also, His signature song is kinda fitting at this time:

Ol' man river,
Dat ol' man river
He mus'know sumpin'
But don't say nuthin',
He jes'keeps rollin'
He keeps on rollin' along.

Like the Mississippi really gives a hoot about who is the head coach of the Memphis Tigers.
I've been going to church with him for around 20 years. He was humble, down-to-earth and as kind a person as you will ever meet. Quite a loss.
I couldn't listen to him sing "Old Man River" without getting teary-eyed (and I wasn't the only one). He was a Memphis legend and will be missed.

Chin up, friends, this horrible week is almost over.
I could listen to that song and forget about the world. Does that make me gay?
I used to go the church with him also. He was a very kind and gentle man. RIP.

Not as gay as Wales. Actually, not gay at all - I just wanted to use one of your catchphrases.

He was awesome. I was sad he stopped doing MIM when he did. I too have tried to find his version of the song on the net, and haven't had any luck.

God Bless your soul, James Hyter.
Sunset Symphony with James Hyter singing 'Old Man River' IS Memphis.

Some of my fondest memories of growing up was going down to Tom Lee Park with the ENTIRE family and spending the ENTIRE day, WAITING for him to sing. I get goosebumps thinking about it.

RIP James.
Tote dat barge

and you wind in Jaillllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

SS hasn't been the same since he stopped singing.
But I keeps laughin'
Instead of cryin'
I must keep fightin'
Until I'm dyin'
And old man river,
He just keeps rollin' along
