Does anyone know how many more if any Men's Basketball Scholarships are available for the 2009-10 Season? If my memory serves me, we have 7 scholarship players returning, and have 3 signed agreements and 2 verbal agreements for next season giving us a total of 12. There has been talk that we are still looking at possibly offering 1 more Scholarship, with the most likely options being Michael Jordan's son, Marcus (a guard out of Chicago) and Chris Pollnitz (a past verbal commit guard from a Junior College). With no seniors on next year's team, does it make sense to offer another scholarship this year or hold off and wait to use next year so that we can have someone in the class of 2010-11? I know with our past history of player turnover, current players might leave the program for various reasons, but that is a unknown that you cannot control and plan for. It will be interesting to see how the Coach Cross handles this.
That would be SWEAT is we could get Marcus Jordan, even tho he has offers from Nebraska, Miami (FL), and Iowa State (I think). Coach Cross better be doing all he can to get him here!!!
At this time nobody knows how many kids we will sign because the unknowns are :

1-How may players return
2-Will Albrecht and Taylor be healthy enough to play (ever)

Only if he works really hard in practice.
Nate Miles is available.
Update, Marcus Jordan has committed to UCF.

cross misses on another. we now are approaching the last days to secure meaningful commits and cross' signature class of 6 full rides has one fairly highly recruited player, dressler. let's hope some of these average-low rated recruits are better than people expect

Who else has an athletic village(Knights Plaza) that features a surf shop and a restaurant(Tailgaters) that has over 50 different beers?

When Jordan talked about his recent visit to UCF, he said he said it was warm and he was wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and flip flops. It had to be the weather.

Plus one of his high school teammates and best friend played for UCF as a freshman last season.
UCF enrollment is about 55% female.

Why are you always negative????
If i'm Marcus Jordan, do I go to a school where my buddy plays and its warm all year long or to a school where I know nobody and it snows in April. Wow thats a no-brainer.

I think we're okay;
Hayden Humes 86
Jordan Dressler 85
Neil Watson 85
Jake Barnett 80
Devin Russell 78

Looks like a solid class.

sorry, if i come off negative. i like to think my postings on cross have been accurate. if neither of us had a life i could go back and show you how most of what i suggested about cross was pretty on target.

when everyone was so souped on him initially, i went to his office and talked w him. afterwards, i posted that he seemed to less ready for the job than he presented himself as. during preseason i watched some of the early practices and posted on how they were intense and more physical but the team wasn't really gelling as a unit and injuries were bugging some key guys. i questioned how he was adapting personnel to style. and i predicted midseason that the team was gonna have a breakdown or conflict soon, about two-three weeks before amos was suspended. i posted about progress when there was some, even in losses.

as far as recruiting, there is sort of a layer of mid major blue chip recruits. guys that could play in a major conf but don't have the right offer, grade issues, are a little small for their position, etc... other than that you fill in guys who have potential or are competitors w enough skill to overcome some physical or athletic limitations. good mac level recruiting classes are at least half of these mid major blue chip guys (guys like ingram, tino, kent, anyijong who were top 10 in their state and had a bunch of offers).

cross has one guy in his 6 man class so far that some other good programs went hard after. these services can rank a recruit, whatever, but the measure is who else wanted them and how much work did they put into signing him. as some of the recruiting junkies here can attest, there were a handful of these type of guys, players we would be excited to sign that we recruited hard who didn't choose Toledo.

This is Cross' signature class. Everything - the arena, the time to prepare, available playing time, long contract, chance to build a legacy, etc... is in favor of this being the class that defines him at UT. I'll give him a pass for okafor and albrecht and tucker (and maybe sterling or even salter will become a good player) that was his first class and he had limited time to scout and recruit. this class... i won't knock it. i hope all the kids turn into players and have great careers, but honestly, the guys we've had to really fight hard for-we lost (other than dressler)
While there are no guarantees with high school basketball recruiting, based on what the Rockets needs are (three point shooting, point guard, and inside depth), I think Coach Cross has met his objectives. In Hayden Humes, Jake Barnett and even Neil Watson, you have 3 players who have reputations for being good three point shooters. Combine that with a hopefully healthy Steven Albrecht and teams are going to have defend the three against us next season more honestly unlike this past season. As for point guard, while the jury is still out somewhat on Larry Bastfield and Clayton Sterling, the addition of underrated Neil Watson gives Coach Cross 3 viable options to work with next season. In Jordan Dressler, you have an post player who should be able to contribute right away to help man the inside with returnees Lo, Anyijong, Salter and Taylor (if healthy). And in Devin Russell you have another inside post precence, who will need time to develop, neverless has loads of potential if he works hard and is properly coached. I guess we won't know for sure on any of this until they lace them up next fall.
I would tend to agree with basketball Jones, Cross met his objectives as far as recruits, but Pono I will be the first to tell you I am not the biggest fan of cross, he is going to change for this upcoming year he knows he coaching style isnt going to work. I need to see the schedule before any predictions but about .500 would be nice. I got that practically every year when Joplin was a coach, I sure hope we never have a season where we cant get more than 10 wins let alone 7.
What we don't have is what we always had a surfeit of when Stan was coach- the 6'5" tweener/slasher who is a threat inside and out. Anyijong most nearly fitrs the bill but he's not going to give you anything off the dribble. Humes may be that guy but I don't know much about him. A Stempin-like forward would be the missing link here.
