Hi, got my tax return in and I'm starting to investigate HDTVs. It would be nice to watch the Tigers on Thursday night in High Def.

Anyone have any recommendations? I'm looking to spend under $1000.
Please note this is not a Want To Buy thread. Just looking for some friendly advice. Thanks.
I don't know, but this http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/elect...er_reports might be worth a $5.95 investment. It has always worked for me.

Thanks, I'll check that out.
Sometimes it best if you can find last years model somewhere, maybe even an online retailer. Panasonic, Samsung, Sony make some of the best on the market. One thing I would do if I were looking is go over to the AVS Forum (Google it) and do some research there. There are several questions to ask also - do you want LCD or Plasma? Used to be that Plasma had 'burn in' issues which isn't the case with newer models as they are not as prone to this. Plasma uses a bit more power and put off more heat - but have greater black levels which can give you greater contrast ratio. LCD are probably the hottest thing on the market - ....oh so many questions to ask. :)

You have a woodrow don't you.
YEP!!
I just logged into my Consumer Reports acct and this is what they have listed. These are around $1100 bucks.

In order by rank:
42" TV's
Sharp Aquos LC-42D65U
LG 42LG50
Zenith Z42LC6DF
Vizio SV420XVT1A

These were notable:
Olevia 242TFHD
Vizio VO42L FHDTV10A

I have a Samsung 46" and love it. Also have a Vizio 32" in my BR and it's a great set too. You can find a ton of TV's Sub 40" that are good and well in your price range.

Showoff.
Vizio is not a bad option if you aren't a videophile. If you are a club member of Costco or Sam's take a look online on their sites. Typically the models they carry are the exact same you see at Best Buy or another retailer with the only difference being the model number. This is done so retailers are immune to price matching with the clubs. I bought a 50" Panasonic plasma last year before the tourney and love it. You could probably find a really great deal on some 720P/1080i TVs right now if there are any out there. Its almost impossible to tell the difference in PQ (between 720P and 1080P) on TVs smaller than 50"....
Alright, thanks everybody for the input.

My wife changed the rules and we made an impulse buy. She apparently had done a little research on the side.

46" Sony Bravia 02-13-banana02-13-banana02-13-banana

It was $1298 at Walmart. Could have bought it online for $100 less, but then I wouldn't have it for Thursday night. 03-melodramatic

Just need to switch out the digital cable box for a HD digital cable box tomorrow and I'm set.

I'm definately pumped (and broke)!
You will love the HD. The detail is awesome. I am looking at blue ray dvd players now.
By the way.... don't waste your time on high $$$ HDMI cables. You can buy great quality HDMI cables from MonoPrice.com. You can get a 6ft cable (1.3 compatible) for around $4.

You're a little late with that info. 03-nutkick

can't go wrong with the Sony...I have one in my bedroom and love it. Usually, you get what you pay for. Just remember, once you go HD you get extremely spoiled......non-HD sucks.
Sam's has an overwhelming advantage on prices.
Yeah, loving the TV and am so geared up for Thursday. Of course, I fully expect the local affliate to broadcast Duke 03-puke.

Once again, thanks for all the advice. I was fully prepared to hunker down and do some research, but who am I to stand in the way of a woman and her whims.
I love my Visio....great quality at a great price.
