My kids are asking for a Wii.

What is the cheapest way to get one?

Can you buy a used one and is it worth it?

What 'package' do you suggest?

Do they work with old TVs (10 years old)?

Price wise, I have always had good luck with electronic equipment (speakers, home theater, accessories) through Amazon. I would get a bundle with one of the Rock Stars/Rock Band if I could, that is the hottest thing going (depends on how old your kids are - Rock Band has too many parts for younger ones to keep track of IMO). I have purchased several refurbished items that I found thru Amazon and have had no difficulty at all with them, and a pretty steep savings as well. (Ipod Nano, Dell Desktop)
Do not buy an used wii. My disc drive sometimes not able to read discs after a year of use. It does work the majority of the time however.

I sold my wii and games on ebay for near face value. Bought a XBOX 360 brand new with two controllers and 60 gb HDD. I love Street Fighter 4!

The moral of this story, buy a brand new wii at retail stores. They should be widely available now. On the other hand, you may want to reconsider since the 360 has so many more higher quality games.

Oh, I almost forgot. Shouldn't this thread be moved?

I have bought quite a bit of refurbished electronics from Amazon and all are great, notebooks, TV etc....
Amazon....bundle.....Rock Band....refurb......only way to go!
You need to evaluate the cost first. A new Wii is $250 and comes with one controller and nunchuck. You will need at least one additional controller and nunchuck, which is $50. Most of the popular games are $40-50.

Watch out for the bundles, because you will end up paying for games you don't want. These are only values if you were going to buy the games that come with them anyway.

I would only buy a used unit if it's a crazy deal. If someone is selling the console + controllers + games for $200 or less. Otherwise, buy all the equipment new and look for used games.

Don't go crazy buying games unless your kids have already played them somewhere else. I would go slow on that part.
The wii is awesome, and works great on an old tv. I have a 27" standard def tv and it's good on it.

One disappointment though is NO NCAA BASKETBALL! It's tough to not be able to rock out with Memphis...
I would purchase new from Amazon.com and if possible, use a credit card that doubles your warranty (as someone else mentioned, the disc drives do have problems from time to time).

Here is what I would start out with (all currently available):

Wii - $249.99
Wii Remote Controller - $35.96
Wii Nunchuk Controller - $17.96

This would cost just over $300 and you don't have to pay shipping or sales tax from Amazon. You will have plenty of fun with just the games that come with the Wii (Bowling, Golf, Tennis, etc.) and then keep an eye out for additional games when they are on sale.
thanks all for the information 04-cheers
