A friend was cleaning out a closet and gave me an old PS2 that supposedly still works. There were no cables or anything with it, just the black box. I've managed to scrounge up A/V cables and a controller, but I still need the power supply cord.

After searching the net and ebay and stuff, it "appears" that a laptop power supply cord will work. Before I plug in my laptop cord and risk frying it or ruining my cord, can anyone confirm this?? or point me in a better direction??

Thanks in advance...
you need to make sure the voltage matches. Look on the PS2 and you should see what voltage it needs and make sure the laptop power cord provides that much. Not all power cords are the same, even if the plugs are.
Ok I'll check that thanks!
If you just want to be safe, I think gamestop sells them.
That might be my best bet. Thanks!
I would think that if you found a power cable that fits it would work since the power supply inside of the PS2 handles the voltage. If it had an external power supply it would be a different story but PS2's do not.
Uh.... in simple layman's terms... ?

So basically there are two possibilities, one is a power cable, which is nothing more than an electrical cord, and then there is the deal with a "box" on the cable, either at the end where it is plugged into the wall or somewhere in the middle of the cord. Is that what you are calling an "external power supply"?

(Yes, I know my ignorance is showing, that's why I'm asking for help!)
Yes the external power supply is where the "box" is in the middle of the cable. That "box" is what changes the voltage going into whatever it is plugged into. The PS2 has a power supply on the inside that handles what that "box" does. So for a PS2 all you need is a power cord that fits properly into the back of the PS2.
If I don't find just a power cord that fits, can I use one with the "box" external power supply if all the numbers match? or even if they don't?

Thanks for taking time to educate me!
Let me ask you, is your PS2 the slim version or one of the original versions?

Original

Slim
It's the original.
Then you just need the power cable. The PS2 will handle the rest.
Thanks so much!! I really appreciate all the help. I guess I'll have to stop at Game Stop this weekend and see what I can pick up. None of the cables I can put my hands on will match. And I'm afraid that the controller I picked up for $10 in a dollar store may not work either. The only ports I see are the A/V in the back, the power of course, and then two USB ports in front. The controller I got doesn't look like a USB connector, but I haven't taken it out of the package yet (just in case).
Cool, hope it works out for you! Good luck! You can find cables on Amazon or ebay as well.
