August, 2008: Cousins displayed his offensive prowess in a variety of ways in leading USA 1 to a quarter-final win over Senegal (2008 Nike Global Challenge). What makes him difficult to stop is the versatility he has at his disposal. Although he has an unorthodox release in his shot, he nailed three jump shots beyond the stripe. In the paint area he has a nice back-to-the basket spin move and he has the frame to finish while taking contact. In addition, he is very effective taking other bigs off the bounce.

July, 2008: Cousins is a skilled power forward in a center's body. He is every bit of the 265 pounds at which he is listed with extra long arms. He has two qualities that all good post players must have: soft hands and good footwork. He competes hard and, at times, seems to display a bit of a mean streak. Has the total package on the offensive end of the floor -- starting in the low post. On the left low box, he likes the right-handed jump hook over his left shoulder from the middle of the lane after one or two power dribbles, especially if he has a smaller post defender. On the right low box, he likes to fake middle and spin toward the baseline for a right-handed power move. One of Cousins' favorite things to do when he posts up away from the lane is to turn and face the basket. At times he settles on posting outside the lane because he likes to show his skills on the wing. Once he faces up, Cousins is a threat for the midrange jumper or to score off the dribble. He is a good passer out of the post both with his back to the basket and facing it. He trails the play or leave the post area to set ball-screens on which he has the ability to pick-and-pop for a 3-pointer or roll to the rim. He shoots the 3 without hesitation and has a nice touch at the free-throw line. Cousins is a good rebounder, especially on the defensive end, and he can use a bust-out dribble to start a fast break. At times, he turns it over trying to make a tough play, but his ballhandling is good enough. He could improve his offensive rebounding simply by going to the glass more consistently. Cousins needs to play lower or get into a stance or to be a better post defender, and he should not depend so much on his size. Finally, he must improve conditioning -- he looked winded rather quickly. Overall, he's a high-major post player and a program-changing recruit for UAB.

February, 2008: Cousins is a strong, athletic and active big man with unlimited potential. Cousins runs the floor well, he is active on both sides of the floor and he rebounds extremely well. He is one of the elite prospects in the 2009 class nationally. The biggest question surrounding Cousins is his attitude. He does not seem to be a bad kid, but he will take plays off and not always play to his potential. One of his biggest attributes is that Cousins is more than just a dominant athlete. Cousins has touch around the basket and he can score with hook shots or facing the basket as well. He has great hands and is a very good passing big man as well. When Cousins "brings it", he is hard to stop, but he needs to "bring it" every time on the floor to live up to the player he can be.

October, 2007: A do-it-all big man. Cousins has the ability to score in the post as well as step out beyond the three point line and knock down shots at a high percentage. On the block, he uses size and strength to create space to get into his move. The game seems easy to him, would love to see him play in intensity on each possession. He rebounds in traffic with strong, soft hands. He has a good handle which allows him to catch on the perimeter and drive to score without being out of control. Great size and strength. The sky is the limit if Demarcus continues to develop. Could become the top player in 2009.

Notes

Travel Team: Birmingham Storm...Wants a clause in his letter of intent releasing him if Mike Davis leaves UAB...Reports say he has officially de-committed from UAB but will still consider the Blazers...Also considering Louisville (Honolulu Advertiser)...
