I was just wondering who our main targets were in 2010 in basketball.. i have heard black and jj but then i have heard people saying that some don't think they are good enough for us.. but i was just wondering if someone could steer me in the right direction.. IMHO i would love to have both of these guys, jj on most recruiting sites is a top 15 guy and black is usually a top 50. . but just wanted to get some of ya'lls opinions.
2010 will be an interesting year in recruiting. We have such a strong class coming in for 2009, that it will be very difficult for us not to sign at least 1 top level guy (besides Joe Jackson & Tarik Black). In all likelihood, we will have at least 6 open scholarships (Mack, Henry, Kemp, PHN, Wall & Taggart/Cousins). There could be more, but I would say a minimum of 6. Let's say we land Joe Jackson & Tarik Black. Our most glaring weakness would be a big time wing player. Cal may choose to wait, or he may sign a high number of guys. I am not sure that we are really "in" with any of the top level guys in 2010 (besides JJ), so it will be very interesting to see who we get, because I find it hard to believe that we are not going to get at least 1 of them.
hate to be a killjoy but I hate to see it stated that Wall and Cousins are already committed to being here next year. I think it is safe to say that we won't do much in recruiting for 2010. really depends on how well guys like Witherspoon, Coleman and Dodson perform. If they don't provide the expected impact next year I would not be surprised if we do all our 2010 signings in the spring.

2010 is a weak class... not much we want. May pick up some jucos and prep school players.
2010 won't be BEGIN to decided til the summer evaluations, IMO. I agree with mitjones that there could be a large # of players that leave. Heck, the evaluations have shown, the past few years, that
players rise and fall quite a bit in the junior year of high school.............and so does the interest of the schools chasing them.
With Memphis having really good recruiting abilities, we'll be "there" when it counts.........as long as the rep of Cal is around for getting players to the next level.
Trust Cal!
Speculation about 2010 right now seems to be inherently flummoxing. We might as well attempt to forcast the weather for June, 2010, IMO. 03-wink

Hot!
Hot it will be. 2010 has been evaluated, and it will be again this summer. The concensus with coaches, services and shoe cos. is that it's a weak class, locally and nationally. Not a tremendous amount of size or really skilled guys. 07 has become the measuring stick. 2011 has a chance to be really special because of the size and ability of players in that class. If Memphis takes a couple of more jucos they would be departing as the 2011 class arrives.
are JUCOs going to be the place again for talent now that prep schools have taken the hit?

Easterwood whenever you post you somehow get onto 2011. Your excited about that class arent ya?
Juco's are reaping the benefit of prep schools being monitored closely, better players are migrating back to juco's. Every now and then you see a class with the pieces needed to be strong, really strong. 2007 was the last one. Alot of people who have been involved with basketball for a long time think that 2011 could be "the next" class. It's going to be good, will the top 10-15 be great players that define the class? It waits to be seen.

Excellent point on the JUCO's. I was wondering why Cal was going after Mitchell after already signing both Dodson & Coleman, but it makes sense now. Only problem is both Dodson & Mitchell are 3 year guys, as they both redshirted a year in JUCO, which means they will both be Seniors when the class of 2011 are freshman. I guess I just answered my own question. Cal certainly appears to be focused on 2011 draft class.

I would guess that by 2010 at least 2 out of 4 among Witherspoon, Sallie, Dodson and Dennis will be GREAT wing players. We should be good no matter what happens with the one absolute need being at point guard.
I saw Joe Jackson play tonight at Collierville, very, very fast kid. Really nice also

I still think you need a top level wing guy, especially if you land JJ. If Witherspoon & Dennis both pan out, then you are talking about 2 dynamic wing players - 1 will be a Junior & 1 will be a Sophomore. Dodson appears to have all the makings of a great one & 2010 will be his 2nd year in the program (as it will for Dennis). I could certainly see all 3 of them becoming good & Sallie becoming a good SG as a Senior. Here is the problem - you have to think that Henry is going to get a ton of minutes next year. All indications are that WW, Sallie, Dennis & Dodson are not made for the PG spot, so you would have a small # of minutes divided among 4 players at the 2nd wing position. You have to think Xavier is going to get at least 30 minutes a game. Somebody is going to be the odd man out & experience will be the thing that they miss out on.

What I am getting at is the actual game experience will be small. It will be much worse if you have a freshman (JJ or someone else) starting at PG. I just think you need a big time wing prospect (or a big time PG prospect if you think JJ is a SG) to bring everything together - especially if Cal wants to make a run in 2010.

A team in 2010 that conists of JJ, Sallie, WW, Dennis, Dodson, Simpkins, Coleman, possibly Garcia & whomever else they bring in - will certainly have some growing pains.

Good point. Next year we will have growing pains simply because our best players will be freshmen and Mack, Kemp, PHN won't be able to be the Dorsey, CDR or Anderson to hold the fort down till the freshmen get more comfortable. 10 will be the same unless CJ is totally comfortable by that time and Wesley is approaching being the Wesley we all think he can be. If Dodson can rebound, he could play the 4, WW start at the 3 and Sallie or Dennis be the shooting guard. We need another Andre Allen type recruit.
