Gay activists furious with Obama

Barack Obama’s choice of a prominent evangelical minister to perform the invocation at his inauguration is a conciliatory gesture toward social conservatives who opposed him in November, but it is drawing fierce challenges from a gay rights movement that – in the wake of a gay marriage ban in California – is looking for a fight.

Rick Warren, the senior pastor of Saddleback Church in southern California, opposes abortion rights but has taken more liberal stances on the government role in fighting poverty, and backed away from other evangelicals’ staunch support for economic conservatism. But it’s his support for the California constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage that drew the most heated criticism from Democrats Wednesday.

“Your invitation to Reverend Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at your inauguration is a genuine blow to LGBT Americans,” the president of Human Rights Campaign, Joe Solomonese, wrote Obama Wednesday. “[W]e feel a deep level of disrespect when one of architects and promoters of an anti-gay agenda is given the prominence and the pulpit of your historic nomination.”

The rapid, angry reaction from a range of gay activists comes as the gay rights movement looks for an opportunity to flex its political muscle. Last summer gay groups complained, but were rebuffed by Obama, when an “ex-gay” singer led Obama’s rallies in South Carolina. And many were shocked last month when voters approved the California ban.

“There is a lot of energy and there’s a lot of anger and I think people are wanting to direct it somewhere,” Solomonese told Politico.

The editor of the Washington Blade, Kevin Naff, called the choice “Obama’s first big mistake.”

“His presence on the inauguration stand is a slap in the faces of the millions of GLBT voters who so enthusiastically supported him,” Naff wrote, referring to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people. “This tone-deafness to our concerns must not be tolerated. We have just endured eight years of endless assaults on our dignity and equality from a president beholden to bigoted conservative Christians. The election was supposed to have ended that era. It appears otherwise.”

Other liberal groups chimed in.

“Rick Warren gets plenty of attention through his books and media appearances. He doesn’t need or deserve this position of honor,” said the president of People for the American Way, Kathryn Kolbert, who described Warren as “someone who has in recent weeks actively promoted legalized discrimination and denigrated the lives and relationships of millions of Americans.”

Would you like a little [Image: cheeses.gif] with that whine?

What a surprise....these GLBT people think they're special and the world should bow down to them. Obama had a lot of other supporters besides these crackpots...

What did they expect, a transgender White House? If these people voted for Obama because of this single issue then I'm not giving their stupidity enough credit.

I expect alot of this. Obama was elected by being vague. Change! Hope! It will be fun to see the pipe dream burst.
.

Swagger - Time Magazine don't hold with your take on the "Busted Pipe Dream".

Maybe they don't read any MSP or watch the MSM to see that Obama is Not Quite God just yet .... 03-lmfao 03-lmfao 03-lmfao

Now when the Sewer Pipe goes Bang Bang and the Fan is on underneath it, That's Gonna Be AWESOME !!!!!!!!! 04-rock

All these guys having to try to Recoup their Reputations for raising this guy up before they even know if he is Real and trying to Regroup from all the Accolades they tossed onto a Rube, will be Priceless and hopefully will make us finally Rethink and Restructure how we actually elect our POTUS.

1000 Dan Rather's running all over the place with rain coats on covered in their own dung and the Fan Plays On -- LOL ... what a Photo Op that'll be !!!!

We have allowed the SCOTUS to install our President since 1999/2000 and if this is not getting a bit sour on the stomach, then I don't know what sour is then.

.
He has to swear to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution Of the United States. It's perjury to break Article two section one, but thats another thread.
Warren's wife has done more to minister to people with AIDS, and raise AIDS awareness than nearly anyone. That includes CA, Africa and the entire globe. There are probably less than 100 people in the world who have done as much as she.

I think these folks ought to be a little more aware of reality. Like Mach and RobertN, their view of the world stops at their immediate line of sight. They work against the very people who'd help them the most.

Now, I'm no great fan of Rick Warren, but looking at the big picture, this is a pretty respectable choice.

I have not been able to tell if he became a Christian because of Christianity or to not be a Muslim in an Anti-Muslim Political Climate.

I mean it does not bode well with the Power Fundamentalist that the man is Black much less be a Black Farrakhan Muslim too boot.

I don't know this guy and don't believe but a very very slim few really do know this guys soul.

He caught a wave in the Perfect Storm and rode it to the White House - - what he does with it remains to be seen.

.
I was actually hoping he would choose Rev. Wright to do the Invocation. "*** **** America! *** **** you honkies! *** **** you George Bush, you don't like Black People! Barack Obama you sell out!"

Actually I am. To make my fundraising efforts for conservative candidates in 2010 really easy, I need Obama to live up to his true "looney left" potential.

I need "Dykes on Bikes" in the Inaugural Parade. I need something like Maya Angelou giving the poem at Clinton's Inauguration. I need a speech out of Obama that sounds like something from Che Guevara. I need Michelle Obama to come out from under wraps.

Visuals people, I need visuals.

That sells. It doesn't work as well when I have to do fiscal break downs and do policy analysis. That gets boring quick. I need a visual hook that gets people to read the fine print.

Obama the "Stealth Moderate" is driving me nuts. Maybe once Congress is in session he will revert to the ol' Barry we know and despise for his leftist agenda.
Id respect him more if he just skipped the invocation and went directly to work.

Wow!!! I thought GAYS were supposed to be tolerant, compassionate and understanding, not wanting to judge others because they don't want to be judged. 04-bs Funny how there is a double standard many Christian BASHERS, Christian-phobes (words like these used against Christians opposed to the CHOICE of a gay life style) are quick to call Christians judgmental yet here we have Gays doing it and nothing. No, "they are being judemental", "they aren't open minded", "they need to tolerate others view and values" WOW!!!
