Congrats to the volleyball team for taking down #16 Tulane today to earn the right to advance to the Regionals in University Park, PA next Friday.

Great job today. Twice they fought back to tie the match.

20-25, 25-21, 13-25, 25-19 and 15-12. Awesome.

BTW, Penn State is 34-0 and word is that they haven't even lost a SET this season. Next Friday would be a good time to start.
Great news! Does anyone know when was the last time a Bronco team made the sweet 16 in any sport?
hoops
DB, was that in 1976?
My guess would be hockey in '96, though it's technically the final 12.
Where will Western fit in the ranking system for volleyball when the tournament is all said and done? I'd have to guess they'd be top 25 if the tournament holds any kind of weight. The current ranking systems I could find had the Broncos unranked going into the tournament.

It couldn't have been. WMU beat VaTech in first round but in those days (before expansion of the tourney to 64) there were 48 teams. I believe that the top 16 seeds had a bye so that would have been the round of 32 when WMU faced Marquette.
Way to go ladies!

WMU was in the Sweet 16 in '76 for sure. I don't know if there have been any other sports since then though.
MH, it hadn't expanded to 48 yet, field was 32.
Quote:The NCAA tournament has expanded a number of times in the last 65 seasons. This is a breakdown of the history of the tournament format:

* 1939-1950: eight teams
* 1951-1974: varied between sixteen teams and 25 teams.
* 1975–1978: 32 teams
* 1979: 40 teams
* 1980–1982: 48 teams
* 1983: 52 teams (four play-in games before the tournament)
* 1984: 53 teams (five play-in games before the tournament)
* 1985–2000: 64 teams
* 2001—present: 65 teams (with an "opening round" game to determine whether the 64th or 65th team plays in the first round)

Hockey in '96 made the tournament field of 12. Does that count?
I say yes, it does count.
Yep.
The closest any team got to beating Penn State in a SET was Ohio State, which pushed them 30-28. The next closest was Illinois, who lost 25-23.

Wow.

Beat the crap out of them Broncos!
I saw them on Big Ten tv a couple of times, they look incredibly tough.
were better then them penn state sucks!
