This is a very good article. I even learned a few things I didn't know and most of this stuff took place while I was on campus.

I find that very interesting. I would be all for tying the Hurons and Eagles together.

I think that the EMU Huron Eagles would work.
I actually think it is something the president would look into. Any way someone can suggest it to her?
Or, how about the Hurgles!!!!

The alumni need to realize that the current HRAC is nothing like the power that fought on campus and fought for copyrights and trademarks. The current HRAC is run by a guy who doesn't understand e-mail, a guy who could've been jailed a few years ago, and a poetry grad with zero people skills.

At this point, the competent alumni should form their own Huron group and bang out a smart compromise.
A smart compromise? When the University holds all the cards! Look for Martin to give the program the support that it needs! We don't need any more confusion about a sports logo. What we need is a winning team!

Agreed, Though I am a Huron, I have resigned myself to the fact that we are now Eagles. Be that as it may, we need a winning program more than we need a traditional moniker,

The smart compromise is to make both the Eagles and Hurons feel equally welcome. With enough money, pressure, and reasonable leadership, it can happen.

At this point, EMU won't win unless it has more people and more money.

I can't believe that the NCAA would allow any sort of Native American mascot, no matter how tastefully done.

My sympathies are with you guys. I always preferred Hurons myself. Why do you think that EMU hasn't been able to get past this issue the way so many other schools have? (I'm not trying to be a smart ass here. I'm truly curious.)
Cawoo, I think that in order to get a handle on the name change at EMU, CMU and Miami should be brought into this for comparasion. CMU did the right thing and will continue to do the right thing in spite of current leadership. Miami, a tribe, worked things out with the university in such a way that only the Redskin nickname was eliminated. I think that university also does a decent job of respecting those who were students during the Redskin era.

The situation at EMU was handled about as bad as it can get. Without taking sides this situation involved lots of lies, extreme stubbornness, misplaced priorities, a drawn-out legal battle, no compromises, lack of accountability, and name-calling.

With all the tension and hurt feelings, it'll take generations for this to smooth over.
