I was having a discussion at lunch with a client and we got to discussing what we feel are the most over-rated bands/artists of all time. We weren't talking one hit wonders, but what some would consider "classic rock". I was just wondering what others thought.

My top 5:
1. Fleetwood Mac
2. REM
3. Pink Floyd
4. Tie John Lennon (as a solo act) Paul McCartney (Wings/solo)
(but I am a big Beatles fan)
5. Bruce Springsteen (I know this one will get some people going against me)
I love Pink Floyd and not sure you would get many to agree that they are overrated...but I'm obviously biased.

I personally dislike Rush and to me they are overrated, but I know a couple of people that worship at their alter.
I like Rush and Pink Floyd

Had this conversartion not too long ago.

I would say

Aerosmith
Beck
Ben Fold
Black Sabbath
Bruce Springsteen
David Bowie
The Doors
Elvis
Huey Lewis
Jimmy Buffet
The Police
Queen
Rolling Stones
Styx
I don't think Pink Floyd or Springsteen should ever be mentioned in the same sentence with "overrated". Floyd is incredible, and were completely ahead of their time musically. Springsteen was arguably the greatest live performer of all time. At one point, his ticket demand was so high that he could have sold out the Madison Square Garden for 7 consecutive nights. The guy used to take the stage at 8 and play until 1am with only a minimal intermission. Today, it is impressive for a live act to last 2-3 hours.

Anyways, my list would include...

AC/DC
Bon Jovi
Aerosmith (although, their old stuff was fantastic compared to their newer material)
Nickelback (This is an interesting one, because anybody with a respected music opinion would tell you that Nickelback is arguably the worst band of all time to make it bigtime. However, it is still a mystery how SO many people continue to buy their albums.
Fallout Boy
Bon Jovi
Nickleback
Awesome thread NIUFAN. Some strong candidates have already been mentioned. Need an "overrated song" thread too.

Bon Jovi - "Livin' on a Prayer"...awful
Aerosmith (early years were amazing albums, lost all respect with sellout album featuring "Don't Wanna Miss a Thing")
Metallica (ok they are good but Lars is the ultimate douche)
Dave Matthews Band/Jimmy Buffet (a few good tunes but no way they deserve the massive following they have)
U2
For my mention of "overrated song", basically any rock song that is suspiciously thrown into the mix of about 10 hip hop songs at your local college bar or at the end of the night.

Livin on a Prayer, Shook me All Night Long, Brown Eyed Girl, Piano Man, American Pie, Margaritaville...these are all songs to avoid.
when picking your bands that are overrated, you i believe you have to look at them in the context of when their music was created, not necessarily from todays perspective...
Dave Matthews Band
Wilco

My friends and I were talking the other day and we realized that DMB is a gateway band like marijuana is supposedly a gateway drug.

DMB can be on the radio, but mainly are not. Listening to their music got me to expand my music choices beyond the crap that is radio. And for that I thank them.
Creed
Nickelback
U2

I am as diehard a DMB fan as there is, and I definitely expected them to be mentioned by a few people. I think DMB is a very interesting case, because most everything theyve done post-2000 is really ****** compared to their 90s stuff...I know thats cliche, but its the truth. I dont quite understand the insane hatred many have for Dave Matthews himself, and those that fall into that category probably dont realize that he is surrounded by some of the very best musicians currently on planet earth. I just wish they would have stayed on the track they were on from 93-2000, because then they would be much more respected and viewed as a truly "epic" band. After the ****** releases of stand up and everyday, though, it may be too late! Bottom line is, I know the greatness they are capable of by listening to or watching a show from the mid 90s..and for that, I love them
This thread should be renamed, "Bands You Don't Like"
Basic summary of how these discussions go...

Overrated bands: bands you like

Underrated bands: bands I like

There are a lot of bands I do not like, however I did not include them.
Jonas Brothers?
Nirvana

Nickelback is just a horrible horrible band. I can't believe some stations actually play them (104.9 as an example). Their first album was ok, but they just suck so bad now. Seriously, who sings about "something in your mouth" and "white stains on your dress". 03-puke

Saw them on Leno the other night...makes me embarrassed for the state of top 30 american music.
Dude - you totally nailed it. I hate hearing the list of songs you wrote below - especially Margaritaville.

Jimmy Buffet and all Parrot Heads make me want to vomit 03-puke They should all move to a commune in Florida and infect each other with the 1978 bad hair virus.

Boyd Tinsley is a Sigma Nu. I had to throw that in there...
