FCS teams don't - and shouldn't - count. Unless of course, you are Michigan.

This is not intended to be a negative thread, but I think we can discuss some perspective at this point.

How has Callaway done the past two seasons with his situation? Honest answers only.
He still gets a grade of "-1" from me. Do I think we are better than our game against Tulsa? Slightly. We are playing better as a team, but are totally inconsistent.

We have a chance to double our win total from 2007, and average attendance is up from 2007, which is also good.

We can be like Bammers and talk about how crootin is gonna save the program, but this is the question I would like to pose:

"Is CNC and staff able to take a fragile program, with a limited history, and transform it into a program that can compete for Division Titles, and BCS OOC wins in the LONG TERM?"

I'm afraid that answer is no. At best, the coaching staff at our fine institution is a rag-tag band of retreads who have spent their entire professional careers taking a hard-nosed approach, losing games, saying "Well shucks it didn't work out," and moving somewhere else under the radar, so that no one is the wiser.
I will only comment to say this. Next year I will except no excuses. It should determine whether he gets a fourth year, or is gone so we can start over.

I must agree with you here - a clean sweep of the coaching staff will only make a bad situation worse.

Imagine how it looks to potential recruits.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but UAB has no more margin for error. There will be no more rebuilding years, no more "starting over" for UAB football. Either we improve next year, or football likely goes away.

That's just the way it is in this economic climate. We either win games and put butts in the seats and show some fiscal improvement, or we go away.
I sure wish I didn't think that there was a nugget of hard truth in there, GN. I still think next year we're better.

Nazi - kinda true but not reality yet but very close - the east side (not the BOT - they have been supportive for them lately) had a promise that if we failed to narrow deficit - it would carry over as real cut next year - just like other UAB accounts. So UAB football may die a slow death of budget cuts rather than sudden ending. I think UAB football will live in some form (reduced/forced to play more money games, etc) until Carol leaves - but the clock is running the economy has given a triple blow to UAB funding.

Next year we better be 6-6 and going bowling or CNC has failed in my book. We have proven that we should of won several games this year with low numbers and a lack of talent. We would and should of won ECU and Memphis and still should beat UCF. Poor coaching on both sides of the ball has cost us wins this year and next year that will not be grounds for an excuse.

Beat UCF and I'll be content that this year was a year of mild progress. Lose to UCF and I'm ready for 2010 and a new, real coach.

On the topic of closing down our program: I do fear the death of UAB football because of the crisis we are going into economically is only going to get worse before it gets better. I do not think UAT will shut down our football program, after all, the NCAA requires all schools to have so many sports in Div I-A to remain in I-A. Without football, what sport are we going to pick up to keep basketball in I-A?

However, if the sh*t hits the fan and our football program is given the option of death vs. I-AA, I'll swallow the medicine and take I-AA status as long as we are building for the future and have a plan to get back into I-A and compete. I'm not picky. I don't ask for national championships. I'd be tickled pink just to see us go to the Weedeater Bowl at 6-6. All I want is a UAB team that will compete; go to a bowl game; win the division; and once every few years win the conference.

I hope CNC and Co. wins at UCF. To have two road win games would be a great way to end the season and look to the 2009 season with some confidence.

You and CNC are on the same page as far as 2009 goes. In fact, his goals are higher knowing what we will have coming back and coming in. We will compete for the East championship and, without a doubt, be bowling. Failure on either of those fronts is not an option.

As far as UAB football dying or moving down a division it's not going to happen. But I'm tired of banging my head against that wall with some of you and explaining how all you're doing is hurting UAB by bringing the topic up. And, yes uabbean, the Eastside is getting antsy and not particularly about football...just about money in general. The benefits of 1-A football to the Westside have been demonstrated to go beyond just money, and they can be demonstrated again (the increase in enrollment from 1-A football, for instance). Garrison will fight that fight if she has to, and I have no doubt she will come out the victor. They can ***** and moan all they want, but the Eastside has yet to realize how the line that separates what they actually have power to change has shifted in the last decade to be very close to 18th Street. And that's their own damn fault, btw.
+1 blazr, my head is sore from banging it into the wall too.

After having discussions with some people in key positions over the past week and a half I seriously do not believe UAB football will die anytime in my lifetime. You can take that for what it's worth but I trust who I have spoken with more than message board rumors and innuendos. UAB football is here to stay and at the I-A level.

That being said, Callaway will be allowed to fulfill his contract and be evaluated on how he did with what he had to work with. Take that for what it's worth too!

I think 6 wins is doable next season.

Remember our Lou Groza kicker left points on the table against Memphis & ECU. Not laying blame totally on him but just using an example saying it's a fine line between winning and losing and a key play here or there and no one is questioning how long to give Callaway except those with unrealistic expectations. Couple of key plays and we are playing for a bowl spot this Saturday. Another year in the weight room, a good recruiting class and possibly a staff change or two and we will be ok.

The benefits of football at UAB would be so apparent that a blind man could see it if we played on campus. Bars, resturants, and other business would boom around a small on campus stadium and we would bring in so many more fans. I'm convinced our team would play better too being in a stadium meant for them versus some trash heap that only us die hards go our to watch them play in.

But once again the economy/reality bug bites. And it hurts like hell.

The benefits would be larger with an on-campus stadium, but they already exist. Our 3-win team has been on TV 6 times this season. Compare that to a Troy team that is competing for the championship of their conference. CUSA is where football got us and the perfect place for all our programs.
Swayze missed the FG last week because of Microphone Douche Boy.

That's no excuse (unless you're looking for an excuse to kick Douche Boy's ass...then by all means go ahead). If I miss a putt because you honked, I'll curse you to the extent of my vocabulary, but it's still my fault I let myself get distracted.

I think you might have misunderstood me. I didn't say anything about not being in CUSA. My earlier post is that I will always be a UAB football fan even if for some crazy out of this world way we are 'demoted' to I-AA. My second post was that our football team would perform better and make more money with that ever elusive dream known as the on-campus stadium.

Basically, we're on the same page 04-rock

I certainly wasn't expecting predictions that bleak....

UAT/BOT is not after UAB football the Eastside is after the money they perceive as lost to football. BUT football requires 170 ships (85 girls matching) . But a Men’s rifle or diving teamwould cost 5 ships plus we could end two girls teams

I agree that Div 1 is valuable to Westside. By the way Enrollment is flat not growing on purpose – Carol is trying to improve the student body academics. I agree that as long as Carol is President _ UAB football is safe –but may we have to actually start lowering the deficit or suffer actual cuts just like all other departments.

True it is about the lack of money. But why do you think losing power in Last Decade ?? Who do you think got rid of Queen Anne - The research docs got her.

Carol is under pressure because even before the down turn – research dollars are not growing at UAB for the first time EVER. UAB is falling down the list rather than meeting Carol's goal of being a top ten research University. It is not fair but the docs are upset about their dollars being spent on sports and heck they even hate working for a ex-nurse.

Their Power is GREATER now - a president leaves and you hire another one – if a reseach doc leaves tens of millions of dollars leave with him. We can not lose anymore Docs. The NEXT president will be a doc and will be part of their agenda. IF our athletic budget is under control by then we will be OK but IF NOT watch out
The name recognition would fall faster than those research docs can imagine, and it will be felt on the graduate side. They are retarded if they can't see that we're not growing because we are a young university without much of a spirited base in a recessionary economic period. With 40 more years of UAB athletics raising a class of undergrads with UAB spirit and money, we will be recession proof. Schools like UNC, GT, UT, etc... are recession proof because they are a complete university. The Ivy's are having to cut back these days. Scale UAB athletics back and ACADEMICALLY we go back to being grouped with the also-rans.
