Cool picture... see, this is the type thing I think Dragonzrealm needs a photo gallery for.
I like those banners and now realized that the UAB logo doesn't look right with athletics.
The arena looks greener in that photo.
We need new scoreboards sooooooo bad!
Why can't we have a center court scoreboard with a jumbo-tron screen on four sides. OK, I know the obvious answer is money; but Coke makes donations EVERYDAY! :chair:

Well... and I'm sure our basketball program doesnt struggle nearly so bad as the football program.

I think MB said once that there's not enough space between the ceiling of the arena and the floor of the court for a jumbotron scoreboard.

No... I think it's because the ceiling cant support the weight of those type scoreboards.

Sounds to me like some reinforcements need to be installed 04-rock
My girlfriend's dad worked for Coke at the time the Arena was being built. He was actually the Coke rep for the arena and oversaw all construction of concessions, G&G room and the aquisition of the scoreboards.
The scoreboards we have were actually Plan B. Plan A was a central scoreboard with two-part PA system, no video screens back in the day. When they went to begin prep for the central scoreboard, the installers realized there would not be enough support for the heavy central scoreboard. Coke, not UAB, then ordered the two scoreboards we have today. The multi-color message boards were actually one of the most advanced features during that time. There was actually supposed to be two PA speaker clusters, but the budget was tight so we were stuck with the one central PA cluster we have now (wonder why the sound sucks in Bartow? That central cluster was supposed to be on one side of Bartow with a matching system on the opposite end).
That's what I've heard as well, Schard - that a center-mounted scoreboard would not work for structural reasons, and that corners had to be cut (such as eliminating one speaker cluster) toward the end of the project so it would come in under budget.

I heard they had to go to the shorter banners because the long ones (as in the picture) interfered with sight lines from high upper-level seating.

Wow... sounds like there have been a couple of problems with the actual structure of Bartow. How much would it take to get some of these things fixed or worked out?
Bartow was built in 1988, right?
I don't think the scoreboard situation was a "problem." It doesn't appear that they considered that concept when they designed the facility.

I don't know if they could come back and add a second speaker cluster now or not. It would probably require a lot of wiring, etc., in addition to the speakers.

I have heard, though, that they are in the process of getting a new sound system for the Arena.

I thought it was already installed prior to the start of the season? 03-confused
You thought what was already installed - a new sound system?

Not according to information a friend of mine got a few weeks ago when he sent an e-mail inquiring about it. Apparently this will be a significant replacement (major cost).

Yeah, I certainly hope it hasn't...because if it has, the person in charge of the project should be fired!
You're on a "(they) should be fired!" kick lately. People working on sound systems, UAB Police, etc. ... Something happen to you that you want to tell all of us about?
I have been told the same thing re: Scoreboard and speaker clusters. I have also been told that a new sound system has been ordered and will be installed over the next 6-8 months and it is a major cost, much more than the floor. This was as of 2 months ago so I don't know if anything has changed since.
