I spent over 20 years coaching high school varsity basketball teams in the Detroit area. I've read nearly everything I could get my hands on that was authored by Pete Newell. At the Bobby Knight Basketball Academy, which use to be held in Bloomington during the summer, Knight frequently referred to Newell and raved about Pete's competitive drive and knowledge of the game. Knight's version of the motion offense, I believe, was gleaned from a compilation of Newell's offensive strategies. I'm very sorry to learn of his passing.
p.s. two other Petes who were major influences on the game were Pete Carril (watch out for that damn backdoor cut) and Pete Maravich, a player 20 years ahead of his time. (see the Pete Maravich workout video)
