Boise State banks on home football games to ensure their financial success

For Boise State athletic director Gene Bleymaier, financial success comes down to six - sometimes seven - days a year. They're called game days. The Boise State athletic department rakes in about $1.86 million per football home game in gross revenue - money spent on tickets, luxury suites, booster memberships, parking, popcorn, alcohol and T-shirts. How important are those six days this fall? The revenue the Broncos produce accounts for nearly half of Bleymaier's 2008-09 budget. Here's a look at the revenue stream for a typical game day at Bronco Stadium, according to Boise State officials:

TICKET SALES ($716,667 PER GAME)

A full house at Bronco Stadium - not including the newly renamed Stueckle Sky Center - is worth $716,667 per home game, or $4.3 million for the season.

SKY CENTER SEATING ($533,333)

The Stueckle Sky Center features luxury suites, club seats and loge boxes - and all but 40 club seats are sold. The seat leases will generate about $3.2 million this season. The athletic department will put $600,000 of that revenue - $100,000 per game - into an academic capital improvements fund.

BAA MEMBERSHIPS ($300,000)

Bronco Athletic Association booster memberships have generated $2,166,259 this season. The vast majority of that number - about $1.8 million - is tied to football season tickets.

STUDENT FEES ($225,000)

The athletic department gets $2.7 million from fees charged to all fall and spring students. The fee is $98 per semester for full-time students and allows them free admission to all sporting events and use of some facilities. It also helps the department meet gender-equity requirements. Clearly, football is the biggest perk. Boise State estimated about half of the fees - $1.35 million - goes toward football admission.

CONCESSIONS ($25,833)

Boise State is averaging $138,000 in gross concession sales - everything from popcorn and hot dogs in the stadium to catered meals and alcohol in the Sky Center. The athletic department gets a commission from those sales. The budgeted commission is $25,833 per game, but that number will go up when the Sky Center sales are added.

MERCHANDISE SALES ($17,000)

The athletic department gets about one-quarter of the gross sales of merchandise on game days. The Bookstore's various locations average about $68,000 on those days, with spikes for games broadcast by ESPN. The new Bronco Shop at the stadium has been a hit. The permanent shop and temporary sales locations around the stadium average about $35,000 in sales on game days.

PARKING ($45,833)

Boise State sells reserved parking spaces around Bronco Stadium for a season total of $275,000.

THE GROSS ($1,863,666)

Add it up, and Boise State hauls in about $1.86 million for each of its six football game days. That's $11.2 million for the season - or 43 percent of this year's $26 million budget.

EXPENSES ($467,500)

The debt service on the Sky Center is $2.2 million per year (plus that $600,000 contribution to academics). The debt service on the stadium addition completed in 1997 is $395,000 per year. That's $432,500 per home game in debt payments. Game operations - the cost of officials, portable toilets, ambulance service, security, ushers and other support items - cost $35,000 per game.

WHAT ABOUT NO. 7?

The Broncos add a seventh home game next year. While many revenue streams won't increase because they're not dependent on the number of games, the athletic department still should collect at least an extra $760,000 in tickets, concessions and merchandise. The cost of that game - against UC Davis - is about $260,000 because Davis gets a $225,000 guarantee.

WHAT'S NOT INCLUDED

These numbers don't include the cost of full-time employees - administrators, coaches, etc. - and scholarships for the players. Revenue sources that are difficult to apply to a single home football game include corporate sponsorships and TV/radio rights, which combine multiple sports.
