2009 recruiting class rankings
#35 Miami
#38 Ohio- all four players rated top 300 in country.

MAC getting good reviews in recruiting for early signing period. Its a good sign when MAC has two programs in top 50.
But as Gene Cross said recently "Can they play?" I'm hoping our freshmen can because we're deadly thin otherwise.
These hoopscoop rankings are the most meaningless rankings anywhere. They give way too much credit for volume of signees instead of quality. Any team that signs for recruits automatically becomes one of the best in the nation. Ridiculous!!

maybe, but the MAC is going to have a rare big yr in recruiting in 2009. those miami and OU classes are very solid. akron got a commit from the top mac recruit since ron harper, central got a top recruit, toledo has a solid class with good size, western has a nice class, BG a well rgarded group...
MAC is on its way back in hoops. Were gonna be a multi-bid league in a couple years with the kind of recruits the entire conference has competed. Very good group of young coaches in the MAC will some solid vets like at BGSU and at NIU. Miami looks look with Henderson ready to take over for Charlie in another year.
yeah, and also some nice venues. EMU, NIU, Toledo all with new arenas. CMU building soon and possibly BG as well. OU and Ball St have nice courts and Kent and Western aren't bad.

The Ron Harper era was before my time but was he rated higher than Zeke Marshall out high school? Obviously, Harper was amazing at during his college and pro career, but Zeke might be the highest rated recruit ever within the conference. I know for Akron to have the number #39 player overall (#7 center) is the highest ever for us.
I agree tht overall MAC recruiting is up this year, I just don't believe hoopscoop rankings have any credibility.

Great to hear all the good recruits coming in and good new coaches. MAC is definitely getting stronger.

Now if only Reggie would start doing something at UB!

Apparantly Walter Luckett was before your time as well. The top ranked recruit in the nation in most estimations and he went to OU. Played beginning in 1972.
Tyree Evans at KSU was #24 when he came out of HS.
Keith Triplett was the No. 1 player in the state of Ohio and No. 44 in the nation by Prep Star Magazine. Prep Star also called Triplett the No. 1 "sleeper" pick in America.

He certainly was a sleeper his senior year. Rimshot
Luckett was on the cover of Sports Illustrated while at Ohio. Those were the golden days of the Ohio basketball program. Ohio was the power in the MAC and perhaps the top midmajor in the midwest at that time. Ohio's Convo was brand new and many Big Ten and major independents came to Athens. Ohio was ranked as high as #4 in country in the 1969. The highest ranking ever by a MAC basketball team. From 60-75 Ohio dominated the MAC in basketball. They played a Gonzaga type non-conference schedule back them playing the likes of Ohio State, Indiana, Marquette, Louisville, Cincinnati, and Loyola-Chicago. Loyola was a top 10 program in the 1960's and had African-American players before many of the top programs. Ohio was also a pioneer in that area and one reason why Ohio played at such a high level during that era. Ohio was elite 8 in 1964.
