I dropped by the Rec Center earlier today and received the "nickel" tour from ATTALLABLAZE (thanks, buddy! )
First, the good:
1) The place is massive. 4 floors of stuff to do. In terms of construction and space, this building has been very well-planned.
2) There is a ton of stuff for the students to do. A climbing wall, a swimming pool, a massive workout room, multiple multi-purpose rooms, a huge running track, a 4-court basketball court, locker rooms, racquetball courts, a rollerblade hockey arena, game rooms for pool and ping pong, and so much more. This place will be a HUGE hit with the students.
The bad:
1) The pool is only 4 feet deep at its deepest point. Whose idea was that? You can't even dive or REALLY get underwater with that small depth.
2) When ATTALLA says there is no green and gold anywhere, he's not kidding. I don't think you guys (especially LJ) realize how much there is a lack of a UAB feel to the place. I guess the best way to describe it is this: You could take 10 pictures, anywhere in the building, and show them to a student at another college. He/she would have NO IDEA what college rec center the pictures were taken from. There is NO UAB insignia anywhere. The ONLY thing that came close to being halfway decent was the 4-court basketball court. The wall padding is green, the sound-breakers in the ceiling are green, and the scoreboards are green.
There is not one single Blaze logo anywhere. Any. Where.
----
Overall, I'm pleased with the layout and design of the building, but the lack of UAB insigna/colors SHOULD and WILL upset many of the students. I hope the University receives enough complaints in this area that they are FORCED to add some UAB stuff.
I also hope when potential UAB students come for UAB Day, they won't notice the fact that there's no UAB stuff inside.
