FSU turns down USF 2009 game in Jacksonville

Florida State turned down a proposed game against the University of South Florida to be played in Jacksonville next season, Scott Carter of NoleInsider.com reported.

USF’s 2009 schedule already is completed, but the Bulls could have moved a non-conference game to make room for FSU.

Gator Bowl president Rick Catlett told The Tampa Tribune this summer that he wants USF for a future neutral-site game in Jacksonville. That remains a possibility, but it won’t be next season against the Seminoles.

FSU coach Bobby Bowden told NoleInsider.com that FSU officials spoke with USF and Florida Atlantic about a game next season. FSU wasn’t interested in playing USF, and FAU had a scheduling conflict.

Ironically when Bowden was in Tampa in July, he said USF vs. FSU “eventually could happen.” But he added: “You usually try to find someone you have a chance to win [against], instead of getting your nose bloodied.”

Confusing.

So if FSU wasn't interested in playing USF...why did FSU officials speak with USF about a game next season?

Maybe FSU wanted the game in Tally vs Jax?

Just seems a bit confusing.
FSU is @BYU and @UF next year out of conference, so I don't blame them for turning down an '09 game. The real reason, though, is Bobby wants nothing to do with USF. That game will never happen with Bobby around (outside of a forced bowl matchup).

It will happen when Florida State is sure they can beat the Bulls. They aren't at present... 07-coffee3

It's similar to to USF-UCF situation. There's no benefit to FSU in scheduling USF. The benefits are all on the side of USF and The BEast...

It doesn't benefit FSU to play USF. They have nothing to gain from playing them.

Where's Terry Bowden now, claiming "Florida schools should play each other."

I smell chicken.
Might also not be a date that is available for both schools without a lot of game movement. Both schools might have a tentative schedule for next year already in hand and they couldn't agree upon a date that was available with limited movement of other games for both schools

Ah...didn't know that and good pt.

With 2 out of their 4 non-conf games next year being on the road...obviously FSU would want the other 2 to be at home so they could have 6 home games next year.

PS. Plus, it looks like USF 2009 Schedule is already completed anyway:

Looks like USF is set up for 4-1 at worst next year, with a great shot at 5-0. IU has made a quick return to mediocrity after 1 bowl game, leaving that schedule as unknown Miami and the 4 dwarves.

I figure Terry's going to be in Connecticut tailgating with his brother Tommy. Sporting News has already reported that Tommy's going to be there...

Never count them as wins until you play them. We will be breaking in a new OLine next year so the early schedule will help. But here is a hint USF has gone 10-0 past two years vs nonconference and that includes games vs Auburn and Kansas so we have taken care of business in nonconference. Now conference games thats a different story.
As for FSU? well if they dont want to play us then thats their choice, I dont blame any school for who they play.

Thats an incredible stat, especially since USF has played some pretty good competition. Not including this season, WV also went undefeated the last 2 years in ooc play.
Not this year. The transition took a while, and of course the bumpy part of the road was our OOC schedule. Fortunately, we took care of business against the SEC. The trick will be to repeat that success against Auburn without Pat White next year - and against LSU the following 2 years.

Fortunately, Devine and Sanders will be around for at least another year... 07-coffee3
i don't fault any team for their scheduling decisions, with a long series against miami it doesn't bother me that fsu said no, however i really hope we can get clemson or va tech in jacksonville those would be some outstanding games. more likely we'll play fsu in a bowl somewhere down the road.
It seems to me like Bowden is the one ducking not Florida State, so I agree with you guys, once Bobby hits the retirement trail and Jimbo takes over FSU and USF will hook up. Unlike Paterno, Bowden is concerned about padding his won/loss stats so he can stay ahead of Paterno in wins. That's why I have a lot more respect for Joe Paterno's won/loss record then Bobby Bowden's.
