Full Version: National Election Reform must happen soon

If democracy is to survive in the United States, we must change the election law to match the 21st century issues and technology. We now face the cold hard reality that illegal aliens can vote without any way to stop them, and people can vote more than once, without any way to stop this under current election law.

My solution:

1) In order to register to vote, individuals MUST have a state issued driver's license or identification card that includes a photo taken by the state on issue date and unique identification number.

2) The identification in item #1 MUST indicate the person's resident status, US Citizen, Resident Alien, etc.

3) Voter Registration cards will be issued with photo ID and registration number that coincides with the number in item #1.

4) At their polling place voters must present their voter registration card.

5) The unique voter registration ID # is entered into a computer system that locks that # out from all other polling places in that state.

6) No early voting but normal voting will run for 2 days, Saturday and Sunday with no individual state results disclosed until Noon Eastern time on Monday.

7) Absentee ballots will be completed by mail or via internet and must be submitted one week prior to normal voting date.

8) NO anonymous campaign contributions, all contributions mus be tied to a valid state ID (item #1) or valid voter registration ID card (item #3).

9) States that fail to comply with new election rules will not be allowed to participate in the electoral college process.

10) Campaign contributions must be from US citizens eligible to vote or Companies headquartered in the US.
NC. There has to be an independent commision that looks at national voting. I agree. There is nothing more important to a democracy than knowing that the majority won. I don't care where it goes I just want it to be fair. When Katherine Harris booted 55,000 Fl. voters in 2000, that cried for oversight. There needs to be a papaer trail of all votes. We NEED to make sure one person one vote. We have to make sure dead people are not voting. I whole heartedly agree that both sides have issues. This truly SHOULD be a bi partisan problem and solution.

NC, I totally agree with you. But I'm sure you know that if anyone proposed just one of your ideas the ACLU and the rest of the left will scream like hell.
I'm still sickened by the sight of people in Columbus Ohio waiting in line for over 8 hours to vote. That screams voter disenfranchisement. I'm not naive enough to know that Republicans have their beefs too. I think we have strayed to the point where both sides will cheat because they think the other guy is cheating too. Problem is. They are both probably right.

I don't know smn. I'm of the left and I'm of the thinking I want it FAIR first. There was a documentary on HBO about hacking elections. This works for nobody.
Absolutely!!....We gotta solve this voting problem!
It really is essential that the process is reformed!

So..To do that we need to form a bipartisan commission and hold extensive hearings! Hopefully they will come away with the understanding that......

We need to have another committee study the voting machines, absentee ballots, voter registrations and proof of citizenship!

We need another committee to study campaign finance, vote buying,
block voting, union influence and voter disenfranchisement!

Another commission should look into foreign influence..lobbyists..corporations..and religious influences in the process!

Damn..I ran out of commissions and committees!!

What the hell...screw voting...it's waste of time anyway!03-lmfao03-lmfao05-stirthepot

Mach, do you remember the legal fights in some states over the requirement that voters show government issued ID cards? And getting a person's citizenship status on that card will make some people's blood boil.

Ideas number 4 and 5 might have a chance of passing if the technology is cheap - but it probably isn't. An arguement might be made that by having all the machines talking to one main computer is very risky both in terms of security and reliability.

And there is zero chance of option 10 ever happening.
union influence

Can we make this so they have more........................... Just askin............
Unions are the BEST thing to EVER happen to America. Just wanted to throw that in there.

No need to reply. I already know most of your guys replies.
Will any of you on the right even admit that it's a problem for people to wait in line for over 8 hours to vote. Can we all just get along on this one thing.

Where does that happen? My ass is very lazy so I use the absentee ballots - zero lines.
The fact that we have the same problems year after year, makes us look bad. I'm tired of hearing about it. We have perfected a lot of things in the world, but we can't get this right. This is not a Left or Right issue, it is an issue for everyone. After this election is over, some one needs to start working out the kinks for the next election. There should be testing done, and machines/computers made that get it right. It doesn't make sense to have these problems year after year.

Re: 5) the lockout should be for ALL states. Not that hard to do.

I've heard from a knowledgable source (admittedly prejudiced, because he gained the knowledge working with James Baker) that one of the strongest (but unspoken) arguments in favor of the proposition that 1980 Palm Beach, Florida, voters were confused by the butterfly ballots was the fact that many of those voters had also voted in NY or NJ, and those precincts had gone to Gore by 90%+. Of course, that was also one of the strongest arguments why their votes should not have been counted at all. So this kind of remained the unspoken elephant in the room.

Why not vote by social security numbers? We all have one.
Rebel Wrote:Why not vote by social security numbers? We all have one.

Why not? As long as you have to present a Driver's license (or State issued I.D. card) and your S.S. card at the ballot box. Honestly, I can't believe that this isn't the policy right now.

As for any other form of voting, absentee ballots etc. I think, if you're deployed overseas in the military, OK, if not...too bad.

Verify all voters via photo I.D. plus Social Security number. If they're overseas in the military, have a reliable government official confirm them.

Registration should be confirmed months in advance. To allow any false names to be removed from the forms.

Only problem is, i'm not so comfortable with random poll workers and hired registration workers/officials knowing my name and social security number. So....what do we do?
Rebel Wrote:Why not vote by social security numbers? We all have one.

A person truly bent on fraud could get around this the same way crooks steal people's identities. I think the best way is by some sort of tamper-proof government ID card. But any system we implement is probably better than what we're using in some states right now.

03-lmfaoA tamper proof ID card?..I'm sorry..You are going to trust the government to be competent enough to pull that off?

We certainly need something to prevent another election like this one.

Having Bush out of the way will help. He'll be harder to run against in each succeeding election.

Why are you laughing at a tamper proof ID card? Look at how hard and expensive it is to counterfeit money - I mean good counterfeits and not something made by a 12 year old with a scanner and printer.
