Is Gene Bartow in it?

If not, then there is no legitimacy.
Coach Bartow is indeed in the ASHOF.
Ah, which one is he not in that he should be?

Good luck Coach Davis!
College Basketball HoF?

Someone around here will know.
Gene Bartow is not in the College Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. However, he belongs there.

I am, however, enshrined in that building in its tribute to wheelchair basketball. A photo of two wheelchair basketball players diving out of their chairs for a loose ball includes me in the background working at the stats table. That was from 1996, when UAB hosted the NBWA Final Four at Bartow Arena.

Why a photo of me is in that hall, and not Coach Bartow, is beyond my comprehension.
There is no College basketball Hall of Fame. The HOF in Springfield is the Basketball Hall of Fame and Gene Bartow belongs in there for what he did at Memphis, UCLA and at UAB. One of the first coaches to take two different teams to the Final Four. He also coached the 1972 Puerto Rican Olympic Team and was nearby when the Munich massacre took place.

Gene is a 1998 inductee to the Valpo Hall of Fame, a 1999 Central Missouri Hall of fame inductee, the Missouri Hall of Fame, the NE Missouri Hall of Fame, and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.

Funny story - In 1989, when Gene was inducted into the ASHOF, a certain Tide coach who liked to wear plaid and had a penchant for beating his girlfriend/secretary was very pissed that Gene got in before he did.

GN, any chance that you have a copy of that photo, or know where I might be able to see it? I have a close friend who plays in the NWBA, and who participated in that tournament that year. In fact, I got him in to Bartow the week before the tournament to shoot around, and he even let me use a spare wheelchair so he could show me how to play the game. I would be interested to know if he is in that photo in the Hall of Fame.

Well, I know where you might be able to see it, but it will entail a trip north.

I didn't have a camera with me. I wasn't even expecting to go to the hall of fame. I visited there when I was in Springfield on a job interview in 2000. The person escorting me around town asked me if I was a basketball fan, I said, "Hell, yeah," and he took me there. While walking around the museum, I just spotted the photo. When I showed it to him, he started bowing to me in that "Wayne's World I'm Not Worthy" way. It was hilarious.

I'd give anything to have a picture of that picture, though.

And that basketball tournament was the most awesome display of pure athleticism I've ever seen.
You can make a trip over to the main campus of Lakeshore Rehab and hit the gym there sometime. They host the US Paralympic team. Outrageous wheelchair basketball as well as wheelchair rugby. If you've never seen the documentary "Murderball" it covers the rugby, well worth the rental. Tough, tough guys.

My only major beef with the UAB admin at this time is that I have not heard about UAB taking the lead in sponsoring Coach Gene Bartow for the Basketball HOF. That is an issue that could be easily resolved.
If Memphis and UAB would work together on it, it could easily happen.

That could really be a GREAT media event leading up to one of the basketball games between both universities!
