Going back a few seasons (2006), Toledo had a 14-0 1st quarter lead at home to Central Michgan and then lost the game 42-20. That was the real turning point of this program going to the dogs quickly.

Since then Toledo is 9-15 with ten losses by 20-points or more. They are just 7-7 at home in their last 14 games at the Glass Bowl.

What happened to that home field advantage?

Ouch !
Was CMU's punter overweight in 2006, too?
Good question Nick. While you're searching, if you can dig up BG's home field advantage, I'd appreciate it. LOL

BG lossed their home field advantage when they put in the new turf, they couldn't water it down. lol. I had too.

I remember that game. There were a few key plays that turned the game around (I think a CMU d-lineman picked a fumble and ran it back, maybe). And if it weren't for a couple plays, UT woulda been up like 21-0 at half.

Your memory is good. That D-Lineman was All-MAC DE Dan Bazuin. He knocked the ball out of the QB's hands, picked it up and ran it in for a TD towards the end of the first half. That play turned the game around for the Chippewas.

That would be former CMU and Chicago Bears DE Dan Bazuin, who did everything a D-lineman could ever want on that play: he got a sack by beating Toledo's LT like a drum, swiping the ball out of Opelt's hand, batting it off the ground, recovering, it, and trucking into the endzone for a TD. 04-rock Toledo never recovered, and CMU shook off its slow start and led 21-14 at the half. 04-bow

Here's another good Did You Know..................

Toledo kicker Alex Steigerwald missed a field goal against Ball State last week after making 23 straight. He has only missed two in his entire career, both against Ball State. As a freshman in 2006 he missed a field goal against Ball State (at Toledo) and then last weekend he missed a field goal against Ball State (at Toledo). Very, very weird that his only two misses of his career were against Ball State, and both in games played at the Glass Bowl.

His career long made is 47 yards and he has two over 45 yards this year, so it's not like all of his kicks are short kicks. Ironically both missed field goals were shorter than 30 yards.

Actually that play was shortly before halftime. It gave CMU it's first points of the game and Toledo led 14-7 at halftime. CMU scored quickly in the 3rd quarter and led 21-14 early in the 3rd quarter though.
I know I'm going waaaaay out on a limb on this one, but something inside of me (lunacy?) thinks Toledo will defeat Michigan this Saturday.

I felt good about this game also... prior to all the blow outs. Would buy a season of job security for Tommy Boy though, I'd hate to see Toledo get rid of their native son.
The CMU fumble just put me in mind of the Fesno State game. Opelt just watched Buizine? pick up the ball and run, apparantly thinking it would be ruled an incomplete pass. Nick Moore did the same on the second play from scrimmage against FSU. Mistakes I can tolerate-drives me crazy to see lack of effort coupled with mental errors. At least in other people- I have great tolerance for those features in myself.

I'm cautiously optomistic about this UM game as well and still think Toledo could come away with the win.

You got me curious, RF, so I checked. We were both a little off, as CMU scored 14 points on offense prior to Bazuin's play, which was indeed right before the half. CMU scored 21 points in the 2nd quarter in 2006:

Is that when Scooter McDougal started throwing games?

If Toledo comes out fired up like they did against Fresno, and U of M plays like they have most of the season thus far, I think Toledo has a very real chance of a win.

The thing is though, Amstutz doesn't get them fired up for OOC games, RichRod got his team fired up by calling them soft. Amstutz had a cookout and movie. The game saturday shouldn't be even close.
I think you can trace it back to Bruce Gradkowski graduating.

I have nothing to pin this on except a gut feeling, but I think the Rockets are going to do well Saturday.
