Sporting News (I think it was Sporting News) just came out with a list of top sports cities in America. It was in the Knoxville paper because Knoxville moved up to 29.

Johnson City was #178...which is REALLY REALLY low.

HERE IS MY PREDICTION: I'll bet we get some kind of press release from ETSU about Johnson City getting ranked. They won't mention that EVERY CITY of any size (even Elizabethton) got ranked. We'll just hear that JC is ranked "among" the top sports cities in America.

Who wants to bet?

Lol another reason for fans to bash ETSU.
Wow I did not know there were only 400 cities in the entire USA. Very good to know.
I don't see a problem with the ranking though though I don't but alot of stock in it. 178 doesn't seem low and certainly not REALLY REALLY LOW.
One thing I don't understand is why in some cases they grouped cities, Quad Cities, Tri-Cities, Tx but ranked each city in this area seperate.
Johnson City 178
Bristol, TN 273
Elizabethton 380
Bristol, Va 384
Kingsport 390
Greeneville 391

Johnson City certainly kicked the crap out of the rest of the area but I wonder what the ranking would have been combined.

But lets compare it to other areas of interest
Mufreesboro 123
Boone, NC 152
Statesboro, GA 160
Clarksville 162
Chattanoga 166
Asheville 172
JOHNSON CITY 178
Youngstown, Oh 193
Murray, Ky 197
Spartanburg 218
Martin 219
Charleston, Sc 228
Morehead 231
Cookeville 233
Greenville, SC 243
Jackson, TN 318
It looks like cities got points just for having a college in the town which I think would explain JC being higher than the other Tri-Cities towns. Look at Elon - they are 184 and ALL that is there is the university. I would not give much attention to this poll and will give it less when ETSU starts promoting it.
More food for thought. Since many on here like to compare the ASun and the Southern, I thought I would see how the school's towns matched up with these rankings.

The Southern's team's towns averaged 180.8. Keep in mind that two of the schools (Citadel and Coll of Charleston) are in the same city.

Davidson 103
Elon 184
Spartanburg 218
Boone 152
GreenvilleSC 243
Charleston 228
Birmingham 131
Statesboro 160
Cullhowee NC 222
Chatt 166
Greensboro NC 182

1989 pts / 11 cities = 180.8

The ASun cities averaged 147.6. As with the Southern, there are ASun teams that share cities.

Nashville 14
Buies Creek NC 250
Johnson City 178
Ft Meyers 227
Jacksonville 39
Atlanta 19
Spartanburg 218
Deland FL 236

1181 pts / 8 cities = 147.6

As far as Johnson City’s 178 rank (which I guess is in the middle of the pack), it is better than 6 of the Southern Conf cities and 4 of the ASun cities.

And for fun, the SEC has an average of 59.0, with Oxford the lowest at 97.
I thought this thread would generate a lot of interest. I'm glad I was right.

As for the ASun teams being ranked higher than the Southern, that makes sense. The ASun schools aren't the major player in many of their towns (Nashville, Jackssonville for example), so the cities ranking doesn't relate much to these schools. However, most of the Southern Conference schools seem to be the only show in town - and most are small towns.

Actually this wouldn't be right. Kennasaw is ranked 260 so they wouldn't be considered part of Atlanta.

1422 pts/8 cities 177.75. just a bit better then the SoCon's 180.8 and ETSU right in the middle.

There are still 34,000 more people showing up each week for football in Boone. Lot better on the local economy than the impact of commie kickball.
They've never had 34,000 at a game in Boone ... never. Let's just clear that up.

They did have 29,000+ last week for Homecoming (look at the official box), and they do enjoy great crowds in the upper 20s most every game. I'm not trying to take away from what they do, but sometimes people on here really start drinking the Kool-Aid and start embelishing.
Apples and Oranges.
A note from the old researcher: the A-Sun has three outliers, Atlanta, Jacksonville, and Nashville both with NFL and/or NHL franchises and Atlanta adding in NBA and MLB. The rankings weren't for college sports, but for all sports. The Socon doesn't have a single city with a major sports team. Take those three outliers out and see how the A-Sun stacks up.

How is johnson city ranked 100 spots higher than bristol? Yes, they only have racing in bristol, but all there is in jc is the appy league and a messed up athletic department.

Oh, must be science hill 03-lmfao
Based on what criteria did they decide the rankings ?
stategradsmoke Wrote:How is johnson city ranked 100 spots higher than bristol? Yes, they only have racing in bristol, but all there is in jc is the appy league and a messed up athletic department.

Oh, must be science hill 03-lmfao

So the TRI comes in at 390 Kingsport, (384 Bristol VA, 273 Bristol TN) and Johnson City at 178. Betsy at 380 and Greenville at 391. Throw in the towel folks. As both Pitt and I have said, this is a terrible sports area. Even Kodak TN (population 8188) is rated above Kingsport, Betsy, Greenville, and Bristol VA. 03-hissyfit
Is that where the TN Smokies play?
Yes, next door is the bass pro store.
Kev, I hope you are wrong. I REALLY hope they don't try to do some kind of positive-spin story on this one. Surely this isn't from Sporting News, this has got to be the dumbest set of 'rankings' yet. This is right there with the ESPN "Who's Next" thing from a while back. Totally worthless.
I'm surprised that Chattanooga is only a few spots ahead of Johnson City. We do have the NCAA FCS championship game, and we have AA baseball as opposed to rookie league. Oh, I get it, it's because UTC does not have a baseball team. Or maybe it's because the UTC football team is only "marginally" better than the ETSU football team. :-;

Maybe JC actually gets some credit for being close to Bristol racing. Sounds like a screwball post.
"They've never had 34,000 at a game in Boone ... never. Let's just clear that up."

Ohhh, Mike... you win...Bowdowntomike should be my new name... you got a freebie on that one... they didn't have 34,000 in the stands last week! just my fantasyland of better things for ETSU.... but you might have wanted to actually be in Boone last week with the 4,000 or so that didn't even go in to the game... and just stayed outside playing cornhole and hanging out... people were told the game was sold out, they cut off ticket SALES because students print off a pass and they don't set a limit on how many students can come in at this point, so they cap the number of tickets they will sell... BUT it sure as hell didn't keep about 45 of my old buddies from hanging out and violating every tailgate law they could find to violate... that crowd sure beats the hell out of the Applebutter Stirrin' crowd... I'll make sure I pull those actual box numbers for you next time if you promise to stop spinning the crap cycle that we get fed from the crap dome...

Jacksonville freaking University, a crap A-Sux team produced the first record for the season:
From: Nathan King (richmondapp) Sep-6 5:47 pm
To: AppState (50 of 60)
23360.50 in reply to 23360.49

Today's attendance was a new record:
30,718!!!!

You also might want to go over to the APP board and spell out that KoolAid thing to them, they do a weekly attendance prediction thread and 34,000 doesn't seem too far fetched: http://forums.delphiforums.com/appstate/messages

Official Citadel prediction thread
From: Nathan King (richmondapp) Oct-1 4:49 pm
To: ALL (1 of 49)
Game 3: The Citadel (3-1) at Appalachian State (2-2)
Location: Kidd Brewer Stadium (20,150)
Time: 3 p.m.
TV: SportSouth, DirecTV 649, Dish Network 437

Notable: Homecoming

Weather at kickoff: Partly cloudy 60 degrees with a 10 percent chance of rain. For the first time in three home dates, it doesn't look like weather will be a factor, so anyone who can get gas will be up on the mountain enjoying some early fall color and the best football in the Carolinas.

The ticket: Much like last week, all tickets have been sold in advance for this game — including what the university has deemed to be the capacity of the grass horseshoe. The 4,400-seat addition will be full, and there will be some muddy App fans with a coveted ticket. It will again be a scalper's paradise out there Saturday afternoon.

* Despite playing the first two games in inclement weather, Appalachian leads the FCS nation in attendance with an average of 29,562 (no zip).

* Last year, Appalachian drew 27,428 for its homecoming game against Gardner-Webb, a then record for homecoming. Don't expect that record number to stand past 2:45 on Saturday.

* Appalachian State led the nation in overall attendance last season with an average crowd of 24,129 for nine games. ASU's regular-season attendance average was 27,140. In nine home games, 162,841 fans passed through the KBS gates last season.

* Despite hosting just two home games thus far, Appalachian's sum total attendance of 59,123 is second among FCS teams in that category.

* Montana is averaging 25197 fans per game over two home dates. Second in the subdivision. The 4,365 difference ASU holds over Montana would rank 88th in FCS average attendance.

* Appalachian's average attendance of 29,562 would rank 76th in FBS.

* This weekend's attendance should knock the longtime high-attendance mark of 25,301 from the top-ten all-time KBS crowds. That mark was set on October 15, 1988. After that, the longest-standing top-ten mark will be 25,584 -- set against Western Carolina on November 12, 2005.

My observation: It's sold out again, but there can be some variation in the number of student tickets purchased, and even more variation on the numbers that walk through the gate. So, who knows what the number will be? Given the nice High-Country Autumn weather, and that it's homecoming, expect an all-time high mark. I'm guessing 32,715 (Altamonte Springs, FL).
... and yes... that poll is yet another piece of crap poll from some really bored people... it makes NO sense...
Here we go again with people using names and trying to somehow downplay the point by calling someone out and distracting from the original point.

I didn't put down App at all. In fact, what they've done is commendable and I said that. All I'm pointing out is how people -- not just people on this board -- love to embelish anything about ASU.

For instance, we talk and talk about their football program, which is great and has created a lot of excitement at App. However, no one wants to talk about the rest of their program and the fact that they've struggled most everywhere else (with the exception of a basketball run in 2006-07).

Meanwhile Bowdown, you or others like you, will get on here and disregard the Director's Cup standings in which ETSU ranked ahead of EVERY other SoCon, OVC and A-Sun team except for Furman, for overall program. But at the same time you'll throw out a 34,000 number for App attendance like it's fact when it's not.

The double standard just gets tiresome.

And before you start attacking again, I think we both probably have more in common than you think. We both hate seeing people in the Tri "bowdown" to UT, and we both are sick of seeing ETSU athletics underappreciated. True Buccaneer fans deserve something as exciting as what App is enjoying with their football program. And I think you are a true Buc fan if you care enough to get on here and give your opinion.

I'm sure you would agree with that?
'02, then why in the world don't you guys speak up over there and publicly state that ETSU athletics will never move forward until football is added back??? Better yet, why don't you guys redo the '09-10 budget by cutting men's soccer, take the other sports to funding at levels similar to other SoCon schools, and add in a football budget? You've admitted you don't like seeing ETSU athletics underappreciated, then why don't you also admit that every single bit of this started the day they dropped football? ETSU will never contend with UT, never get any respect in the Tri-Cities, and will never again be able to compete with App (or any others at their level) on the national stage until the 800-lb gorilla in the room is dealt with.

Trust me, 90% of sports fans don't care about the director's cup, don't care if App's field hockey team is "struggling," and probably wouldn't know if they are because they are INVISIBLE. All they see or care about is the football and basketball teams. Those teams are successful and no fan over there would trade any of it for 100 field hockey championships. Are you guys truly that out of touch over there? You better wake up because "helped ETSU drop football" don't look too good on a resume.
