The GANG GREEN section looked awesome on t.v. last night. It actually looked like a legit student organization. Did you guys have a strict rule that you had to be wearing a GG shirt to get in that section? If so, it worked great because it looked like a sea of green. There seemed to be alot of enthusiasm there.

The band needs to come up with something to distract the opposing team when they are shooting free throws.

I wish I could have made it to the game!

St. Louis, were you holding the Jack sign anytime during the game? If you were, I saw you.
Nope. That's Schard and he was 2 rows directly behind me.

One thing I CANNOT stand about the band is that in the rare moments when the entire crowd is chanting and making noise during a timeout after a big play they strike up some song. I really wish they would just shut up for a minute and let the crowd continue on.

ANOTHER THING...THE DEFENSE CHANT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO GO AT WARP SPEED!!!! I WAS ABOUT TO GO BALLISTIC LAST NIGHT WHEN THE SIDE I WAS ON WOULD START IT UP AND THE BOZOS TO THE RIGHT OF US SPED IT UP TO THE POINT THAT IT WAS OUT OF HAND
I wish the whole student section would wave their arms around when opponents are shooting free throws or have them vertical and then drop off to the side just as the opponent is shooting. We've tried it, but it doesnt seem to take with the other students. It's taken forever to get them to learn to put up their hands when we're shooting free throws.
yes, there were several people who have no rhythm and were doing the chants entirely too fast. chad bryant was one of the main culprits.

One thing that is killing college basketball, not just at UAB but other places also, and that is the sponsored contests during timeouts. There were a couple of times that drove me crazy.

Timeout occurs, UAB is on a roll the crowd is going crazy, and all of a sudden you hear "Who wants a T-shirt?" The cheering for the team changes to yelling for a T-shirt and the energy dies down. I am also tired of the contests.

Making noise is not the same as cheering the team on. Yelling for a T-shirt or because someone is not crawling in the correct direction is not as energetic as being pumped about UAB.

I remember when the noise level continued through the timeouts until the game started back. Now because of the contests and give-aways, it has to build back up again.
Yeah, but who cares about the hands up when our players shoot.

I am only interested in throwing off the opponent.

When I see the more storied universities play on ESPN, I always see some kind of distraction behind the backboard. I really think that would throw off alot of our opponents, especially in C-USA
The band thing, believe me, we cant really help. We're told to play no matter what (unless that involves interrupting the guy on the PA). Whether the fans are booing at the officials or going crazy because we just had an awesome play, we're supposed to play. I also agree that the t-shirt thing is stupid. I'm not a big fan of having all of the personal addresses on the PA during timeouts either, but whatever. Maybe if we sold out more games we wouldnt need so many promos.

The band seems to always play the one time I want to hear the PA announcer, when he is doing half time stats. I can never hear because the band is playing. Nobody is blaming the actual members of the band.

As far as selling more tickets to reduce sponsorship. That would never happen. If we sold out every game, there would still be sponsored contests or giveaways. Everyone does it. For us it is survival, for schools that are profitable, it is greed.
Speaking of revenue I would love to see our numbers for basketball compared to 4 seasons ago.

Think about how much more money we are making through TV games, NCAA tourney revenues, increased attendance (as of right now it is about double of what it was in 2001-2002), donations, advertising, etc.
Here is my gripe about the band. Everything the band played Saturday night seemed to be played in slow motion. The tempos were off by about 20-25 beats per minute. The fight song is supposed to be up tempo, not at 115 bpm. Plus, what happened to the and playing songs before the game and again at halftime (after the stats for the first half are announced)? Also, what happened to the band playing a couple of tunes AFTER the game while everyone is leaving? Things definitely aren't done the way they used to be. 03-banghead
now if we could only get out of "The Curse of Bobby Staub" so that we can start making money off concessions.

That would be Gene Fambrough for you ... he REFUSES to play anything up tempo. Dont ask me why but it sure as heck pisses me off too.
My gripe about the student section is where we aren't together on our chants. I was sitting right in front of 3 people that were loud but could not get a few of the cheers right. They kept screwing up the cheer that goes "U...............A...............B........Go.....U.....A.....B.....Go..U..A..B..Go Blazers....." Instead it sounded like "U.....U.....A.....A.....B.....B.....Go...Go...U...U...A...A...B...B..Go...ubaslkjfioaejoifvzxncdlkjeroia....." 03-banghead Whenever we would get done everybody would look at them but they couldn't hop on the clue train. I'm hoping that was their first time at a UAB game. During my first couple of games I wasn't that loud on any of the cheers other than defense. Now I try to scream at the top of my lungs during the cheers most people have trouble with.

I too hate the speeding up of the defense chant. I think that the stomping of the feet during the defense chant is what encourages people to speed up the chant. Maybe the band could hit a cowbell to help us keep the same tempo. I like the stomp too well to give it up.
STL is right on. I was thinking of an eletronic display of "DE - FENSE" that pulses between "DE" and "FENSE." We could put it on the floor at the base of the student section to helps students stay in rhythm.

My god, that is just sad! What you need are some brothers in Gang Green! And this is from a white guy...If a student section can't pull off the DEFENSE chant without a teleprompter, then the future of our nation is truly at risk...
I don't think the Athletic Department will ever get a cut of concessions money unless the Arena gets moved under their control down the road.

Steve Mitchell and his folks work for a different department on campus.
I agree, this is not calculus we are talking about...... 03-lol
Gary Sanders, on the radio, referred to the Gang Green as the GREEN HOUSE GANG. He thought it was great how the students participate in the GREEN HOUSE GANG. He said it at least twice.

Well, there is a group of 5 or so alumni in the Golden 100 on the Campbell Hall side that always hold up this "Greenhouse Gang" banner at every gang. It must be some kind of alumni group or something...I dunno.
it's their tailgating group.
