People are wearing around campus.
Pisses me off to see it everywhere you go.
You just want to ask that person, where are you standing right now? What campus? Where is your money for tuition going as we speak? Not Tuscaloosa.

Can't figure it out. 03-banghead
It frustrates me too... but it's not just Bama. It's Auburn stuff, Florida State stuff, Tennessee stuff, etc. I think it's ridiculous. Maybe we should start an oncampus organization designed to jump out and embarrass people wearing other collegiate stuff around campus and/or provide them with a UAB car sticker and/or t-shirt.

the only people you would embarrass would be yourselves. its also a great way to make sure that a potential uab fan remains a fan of UAT or Auburn. I know that if some ass walked up and started giving me crap about wearing a UNLV shirt when I was at UAB I would have told him to go F*** himself. And if he did first thing in the morning while I was still hung over and he was waving a UAB shirt in my face I would have shoved it so far up his ass he would have had to go to an ENT to have it removed.

You cant expect someone who has been a fan of school X for his or her entire life just to stop being a fan. I dont care if someone is wearing an alabama jacket to a uab game as long as they are there cheering for UAB. Eventually those casual fans might just end up as UAB fans first and UAT etc fans second. Ive seen it happen more than a few times. If you give those people a bunch of crap when they show up then the stop showing up and they become anti uab instead of hard core fans. attitudes like yours are one of the reasons UAB has such a crappy fan base.

I wouldn't want to embarass people, but we could start a fund to buy a stash of UAB hats, bumber stickers, t-shirts, etc. Then we could designate a current UAB student to load up a backpack and walk around campus. If he/she sees someone with the "wrong" hat, give them a hat, if someone has the "wrong" shirt, give them a shirt, etc. Wouldn't want to stick bumper stickers on people's cars, but could stick them under their windshield wipers (assuming they have a "wrong" sticker) with a nice message about supporting your school. Two things though: 1) Be nice, short, and to the point. Give them the hat, wish them good luck in their classes, remind them that students get into sporting events free, and move on. 2) Avoid the Business school side at night and the graduate/medical side at ALL hours. Many of these students didn't go to UAB for their undergrad and I can understand them supporting their alma mater. If I had went to another school to get my masters, I would have worn UAB stuff and supported the Blazers so I can understand why they will...I'm sure you see the same thing at Vanderbilt, Duke, Harvard, etc. around their MBA programs...

Hey ...I know from experience that it works. First day of orientation I was made a public spectacle for the first large meeting of the day because I was wearing a UAT shirt, and well... I havent worn that (or any other) UAT stuff again. In time, I became more and more bitter towards Bama. But yes, the orientation team made me stand up in front of everyone, take off the Bama shirt and put on a UAB one... I think more of that type thing should be going on, but that's just my opinion.

growing up we whenever we went out of town we always stopped at the local college bookstore and bought a couple of t-shirts. I am sure I wore shirts from at least twenty different colleges to UAB while I was there. (although i never wore a bama or auburn shirt)

Moreover, I dont think my attitude or others like it are responsible for UAB's "crappy" fan base. Let it be known that I've done nothing like that to anyone at UAB. My point is not so much that they wear ANY other college stuff, but when they wear stuff that is directly in support of an institution that has been directly involved in trying to shut down our athletics, yes, I have a problem with that. I dont think students are too well received at UAT wearing Auburn stuff and viceversa.
I have had professors ask students in the class room why they have on a Bama cap when this is UAB?
Realistically, if you grow up in Alabama, you have to choose Auburn or Alabama at a young age. It's just part of the culture. UAB is making inroads, we all see the little kids at the games in UAB gear and they will grow up as UAB fans, in theory anyway. Making it too confrontational will backfire. Lots of folks have worn 'Bama gear their whole lifetime, you won't make friends by getting in their faces about it.

If we can be nice about it, make it a school spirit thing and a support of the school's teams thing rather than jumping in and japslapping someone because he's wearing a UAT hat, it will work better. I contend that growing the program over time is the only way to go. Things like going to the Sweet Sixteen help to convert the heathen, as well as simply taking them to the Bart to catch a game (and the Blazer fever).

OTOH, the thing at orientation where they embarass the guy in the UAT shirt is great, and a very effective way to get the message across.
Most of them people I have talked to claim they can't afford to go to Alabama or Auburn, so they are "forced" to go to UAB.

I am proud to say that my children have been answering that question "UAB" all their lives--even to the rolled eyes and puzzled looks of their friends. And now my oldest daughter will follow both her parents as a UAB student in the fall (having earned herself a scholarship, if I might braggingly add).

So, there is hope for a new generation.

I think time is one of the few things that will change this. Both of my parents got degrees from UAB. My oldest brother graduated with his degree from UAB, and now I'm at UAB. Now, UAB alumni are starting to have children of their own reaching college-age, and many are following in their parents path (as many do at other schools like UAT and Auburn). It will only take time.

So, if your parents were UAB alumni, and your older brother got his degree from there, why in the world were you wearing a UAT shirt to orientation the first day??????

If we UAB grads aren't raising UAB fans, there's something wrong. My kids wouldn't be caught dead with anything on from Alabama or Auburn (and that may be because they think that if they WERE caught, they might end up dead!).

uab's tuition is actually more expensive than uat's or au's. it was in the kaleidoscope last spring sometime when they were talking about raising tuition again. i always smiled when tuition was raised because it meant that i got more money thanks to my scholarships.

Because my parents were still Alabama fans... partially cause my dad started out at UAT.

It's these rebellious kids of today, I tell you.

My five year old son now believes that anyone wearing an Alabama shirt falls into the category of "mean people" j/k

He has asked me seriously a couple of times why we don't root for Memphis since we live in Memphis, and I have explained that I went to school at UAB, so I root for UAB...and that Memphis is "mean people"

He will probably rebel against me one day and be a bammer fan. He gets cut out of the will if that happens. 05-nono

yeah...that excuse doesn't hold water. Unless they live at home, which admittedly a lot of them probably do, UAB can't be any cheaper than the other two.
Lots of kids from around here start out going "off to college" at AU and UA, then they bust out, er, decide to move back home where it's cheaper to live. Nothing new about that one, and a lot of these folks really are UA/AU fans first.
