Illinois guard David Brown commits to Western Michigan

Rockton (Ill.) Hononegah's David Brown is the third player to join WMU's class of 2009. Brown had earlier offers from Oklahoma State, DePaul and Cincinnati, among others.KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan University sold David Brown its plan to put him on ESPN's SportsCenter and the heralded basketball recruit loved what he heard.

This has nothing to do with highlight-reel dunks and game-winning shots, however. It's not that Brown has anything against dramatic plays on the court, it's that he actually wants to host SportsCenter someday as a broadcaster.

"They showed all the people I'd work with at the school, if I don't got to the next level (in basketball). I didn't want pass that up," said Brown, a 6-foot-3 guard out of Rockton (Ill.) Hononegah High School, who verbally committed to WMU's men's basketball program Sunday.

The Rivals.com three-star recruit made his decision after returning from a visit to Missouri State earlier in the day. He canceled a scheduled trip to Bradley.

Brown is the Broncos' third verbal commitment for 2009, joining Grand Haven point guard Austin Harper and Lawrence big man Shayne Whittington.

WMU has one more scholarship available for '09 and plans to use it on a power forward with range -- a player in the mold of ex-Broncos Jon Workman and Levi Rost.

WMU coaches can't comment about specific recruits until they sign letters of intent, which Harper, Whittington and Brown are expected to do in November.

Brown's AAU coach, Larry Butler, is under no such embargo. Butler, a tell-it-like-it-is significant figure in Illinois recruiting, said he's glad Brown made the decision for the right reasons.

"I'm so happy for him. It comes down to finding the right fit. David will be a dynamite player in that league," said Butler, who's coached NBA stars Dwyane Wade, Andre Iguodala, Corey Maggette and current WMU center Donald Lawson during his 13 years running the Illinois Warriors program.

"David is a guy who's a jump shooter with the ability to post up smaller opponents, get in the lane and draw fouls. He's a scorer. I'm telling you, he's going to be a guy who scores a lot of points in that league. He's put himself in a position where he's going to play immediately, have a chance to be newcomer of the year, a lot of things."

"His defense is OK," Butler continued, demonstrating the honesty in his no-fluff evaluation. "He flops a lot, gambles. He can defend. ... When we need him to, he's a lock-down defender. He needs to improve his ball-handling and defense. But David's going to be an excellent collegiate player."

Butler said Brown can defend both guard spots and the wing. WMU is expected to use him at 2-guard or on the wing alongside 2008 freshman Demetrius Ward.

As of July, Brown had scholarship offers from schools such as Oklahoma State, DePaul and Cincinnati, among others.

Later in the game -- though DePaul, Cincinnati and Northwestern were still interested -- Brown zeroed in on Missouri State, Bradley, Loyola-Chicago and WMU, taking an official visit to Kalamazoo the weekend of the Broncos' home football game with Northern Illinois.

WMU was the first school to recruit him seriously and Brown didn't forget it.

"That was very important," he said. "It showed characteristics of the school and people there. I knew I could trust them.

"Expect a player who loves to win -- a shooter, driver, slasher, defender."
