The MAC had a good weekend in terms of nabbing some of the top available players for 2009. NIU got Tony Nixon. Also this weekend Western Michigan got David Brown of Rockton Honnenegah H.S. and Ohio got D.J. Cooper who is a teammate of Nixon's at Seton Academy. The conference may be down this year but there is some good young talent heading to the conference and it will be up and stronger again. Kent State will probably always be strong. If NIU can be atop the league in a couple years it will be awesome. Who knows, maybe the MAC will someday soon have a legit argument for more than one NCAA team, whether they get it or not.
True dat. If Toledo gets Marcus Jordan (Mike's kid from Whitney Young), that would make for a nice sweep of Illinois for the MAC.
I read today where Cooper chose Ohio in part because the coach there coached Michael Conley in high school and knows how to develop point guards. I think the MAC currently has some coaches who will get it done recruiting. They obviously are looking hard at the state of Illinois, as they should be. They always have but haven't always gotten their targets to commit. It's going to be a very respectable basketball league again in a few years. Recruiting momentum like that is good for the MAC. There are lots of good, hard-working coaches out on the trail of the good players, led by our very own staff!
Should we have been on some of these other kids like Brown and Cooper who committed to the other MAC schools? No reason why we couldn't push our luck and continue a recruiting roll.
I think they offered Brown a while back as well if I remember right. Nixon is a better shooter tho and we don't need another point guard in this class. Brown had some high major interest but I think those schools backed off some or filled their scholarships. I don't know if there was room for another 2009 player anyway. The staff is probably now working on 2010 kids. My guess is the staff is happy with Brown and Wink.

The staff was in on David Brown very early. Brown turned his attention to the high majors when he started playing AAU ball with the Illinois Warriors. NIU then turned their attention to Nixon and locked in on him good.

We wouldn't have had room for both Brown and Nixon. Brown proved to be a streaky shooter who's stock dropped during the summer. While Nixon's stock rose during the summer. At the end of the day, I like where the Huskies landed.
