First, great game to watch in person. Really pleased with the effort Saturday night by the Rockets. They faced one of the top teams in the WAC and nearly pulled one out. I didn't think Toledo was going to keep this game below 10 points, but I agree with Brad Fanning that based on the performance, "Rocket Football is back!"
Quickly:
The reason we lost this game was Fresno State's ability to wear Toledo's defense down in the 2nd half. They seemingly got 5-6 yards each carry and had long, efficient drives. The surprising factor was both offensive's ability to control the line of scrimmage for the entire game.
The play-calling was fine. Quit nit-picking.
Dajuane Collins has an explosiveness factor that makes him a game-changing factor. I didn't realize he was that good.
Aaron Opelt had a fantastic game. This kid makes smart decisions.
Anyone who knows anything about football understands the necessity to win the battle in the trenches. Toledo did that with freshmen and sophomores.
Nice to see John Allen have a good game. Expect similar performances the rest of the way.
Defense looks to be really solid. I know Fresno wore them down in the 2nd half and they just looked a little tired. They only had one stop in the second half. But, I see a young, veteran squad with a lot of talent and some speed.
I don't have a problem with Amstutz going for two because he knows his team. Personally, I would've kicked it because Toledo showed that they could score on Fresno willingly and you got the feeling that our defense was going to make a play eventually.
Finally, really disappointed with our student section. It seems like this section has gotten progressively dumber since I was a part of it. The "f u Fresno" chant was ridiculous. The fight breaking out as our guy was laying on the field was just embarassing. And the "overrated" chants while we were losing was confusing. I just hope the drunk idiots decide to drink less before the next game.
