What can fans expect Saturday from the band?
I know the band is doing a spy show. Basically name your typical spy show theme song and it will be in it. I'm actually not in band this year (long fan) so Bucfan would be a better person to ask.

I'll be at the game though, it's gonna feel weird to be able to tailgate for the first time...I've been here since 2004!!!
yea we're doing a spy themed show that is a lot of fun, at 1 were playing like a 15 min "concert" at the BAVC, oh yea unfortunately during the spy show we are not even turning backfield to the student to play, which I am not happy about
As I student I would find that disrespectful regardless of the contraints with music or formations issues.

Yeah, it's a load of bull that we have been fighting with the director over since he arrived here. We've had to make a lot of noise just to get the little bit that he lets us play to the back. I think he's just trying to bring in as much money right now while he is up for tenure so he is saying forget the students cause they won't help that now.

I honestly think that if enough people sent him an e-mail after this game saying how much you disapprove of this, there would be a chance of change. You can get his e-mail off of the band website..

I dont want to sound like a deadbeat the night before our home opener, but is anyone else frustrated lately with direction of things as a whole. There seems to be a growing disconnect that really is starting to bother me.

I think some people just always look for reasons to complain.

I love the band, believe me, I have put a ton into the band. However there is a lot to be said for giving respect to both sides of the field when performing. A lot of the time the people that we want to hear us play are on the student side. Also I make a big deal about this because we have been told that this would be getting better, but it has gone the other way.
Maybe Compher needs to be contacted by fans and students by going over whoever Band Director reports to outside the athletic dept.

Other observations:

Best I could guesstimate , the band has about 120 members - seems like a low number.

Music selection & performance was good but not particulary memorable.

The spy glasses were a clever prop for Silverettes but so small I wonder how many noticed them?

Enjoyed the vists to aisles in West Stands, a nice tradition.

I preferred the old flags vs new ones which do not look BLACK & RED to me but from my vantage point deep navy & funk light orange - ouch.

Purple flags For flag team - yikes !

I enjoy watching band having fun and singing, dancing in the stands.
Props to the band for another job well done. I for one am not offended that you don't get to play towards the East stands....most students go out at 1/2time for beer anyway. If a woman donated big bucks to endow some scholly's...do her the honor of playing towards her. Schollarships for the band is a step in the right direction, I applaud her for her generosity.

Highlight of the day: Band playing the song "Apache (Jump on it)" in the stands was AMAZING. Football team was LOVING IT. I hope this becomes a new tradition...

Yet ANOTHER tradition ripped off from a Big 10 school. Yet the blackout is unacceptable.

The Krush has a cool dance they do to the song. Did they rip it off someone else or were you talking about them?

everyone has the same stand jams, the schools that have their own stuff have had their stuff for decades, that stuff just doesn't happen over night

I am all for taking a few traditions here and there, thats my point. I would love to do the blackout here but the marketing dept. says too many other schools do it. Yet we tried to take the bells from OSU.

Minnesota did it. Thats what I was referring to. I like it, I just think its funny that they are all so opposed to a blackout, yet they take everything else they can think of from the schools we visit.

We love that song and have been trying to get it in the folder for a couple years. The director promised it for us by opening day '06, but it's nice to hear it now.

Also, yeah, a lot of bands play a lot of the same songs, but that's because we play songs that the fans would like. Fans across the country generally like similar songs, thus bands play similar songs. Oh and believe me the last thing this director wants is for this band to turn Big 10. If people want to hear different songs, send an e-mail to the director. I know that previously I've asked for ideas and gotten almost no responses, so please don't be bitter about the Big 10 or whatever and realize that this band is improving alot of time with or without the help of the director. Band people already don't get any respect in the music building or basically anywhere on campus so don't pick on the band for little stuff that is not in their control.
The band should play for the benefit of the West and East side of the stadium. It bothers me that this is even an issue. I think the band does an admirable enough job and I admire the contributions of the students who participate.

Thank you, and yeah it's really bad that the way the band faces on the field is even an issue.
NIU builds a small end zone and band plays to both sides from there.
