......would go a long way. Just watching news of the long lines waiting for FEMA help in Texas post-Ike. They interviewed a woman with three young kids waiting in one of the lines. FEMA tells these folks that they must boil their water. Hello.....they have no electricity. The food boxes being distributed by FEMA include items like boxed macaroni and cheese and packets of rice mixes which must be cooked. Hello.......they have no electricity. The woman I saw interviewed suggested that there was no reason for FEMA to be distributing ice, since they had no food needing cooling. FEMA has plenty of ice to distribute, but they're running out of bottled water. Hello!

Wow.
What, you expect them to run smoothly? They should outsource government work and encourage corporations to keep jobs at home, it's all backwards.
Damn, I thought government was the solution to everything. Can't wait till they get their mits on healthcare.

"Okay, if you do a 3 inch cut right there, you can reach in with some pliers and yank that sucker right out. Just make sure you boil the pliers first."
Healthcare is the worst possible example of the government potentially ruining a system that you could use, it's already a bureaucratic mess ruled by a handful of insurance companies (who by most accounts are one of the biggest lobbiests' in Washington), you need healthcare, you just HOPE that your plan covers the treatment for what ails you. It's a mess.

Ask any Doctor or hospital, they'll tell you that dealing with Medicare isn't much different than dealing with Insurance companies.

Instead of critizing their attempt at a remedy, maybe you talking radio head quoters on the right could be constructive, propose your own solution, admit there is a problem and quit saying that the "status quo" works.
Here's an important START that could save hundreds of millions (if not more) of "our" healthcare dollars.

These are suggestions for all of us.

1. Lose weight

2. Stop smoking

3. Exercise

4. Stop eating junk

5. Don't make babies that you aren't ready to support ($$$ or emotionally)
Have you ever asked people why they START #2? BTW, I'm seeing more and more insurance plans give breaks to non-smokers, and the wots is that they're going to start testing for that in the near future. As well they should, there also should be a "wellness" break for those of us who keep in shape.
What's interesting to me is how soon Bush declared Houston-his home digs-a federal disaster area compared to New Orleans after Katrina. It's quite apparent ole Dumbo had his finger on the pulse of Houston from the get-go, but he wasn't really concerned about a lot of African Americans stranded by Katrina.
I'd quote Kanye West here, but it's really not worth the effort.
You mean 48 hours after a hurricane everything isn't running perfectly. The hell you say.................
Here is what I find interesting:

Thousands of people (morons in my book) ignored the mandatory evactuation order. That part is fine. The disturbing issue is that when the **** starting hitting the proverbial fan, these same folks started calling for help and wanting to be evacuated. 01-wingedeagle

Problem is, the people who had to come rescue them put their own lives in danger and spent a considerable amount of money going in to save these idiots from their own stupidity.

Next hurricane rule should be that anyone that is too stupid to leave when directed is too stupid to be rescued. If a rescue should occur, said moron should go directly to jail and be charged the full amount of the expenses to save their hide. They should also be kept in the wading only area of the future gene pool.
Well to that note, when floods hit us in Arizona, and they did hit hard, we had "dumb laws" that enabled municipalities to charge the morons that ignored the warnings and tried to drive across the washes (rapids more like, but usually dry) and got caught. Coast states should enact similar rules when people ignore evacuation warnings.

Not everyone is capable of getting up and leaving. You have elderly, disabled, imfirmed. They're not all ignorant fools.
They were evacuated the other day, (Thursday) before it hit the fan. No excuses.

Those with special needs were provided for. I am only referring to the "cowboys" who wanted to ride out the hurricane, and then wanted to climb down from the horse once it started bucking.
There is some contradiction on the evacution. The State of Texas at one point issued a directive to "just hunker down".

In Houston, they did a big evacuation a few years ago. Did you know Houston has 4 million people? Did you ever see the Interstate with 1 million vehicles on it? (assuming 4 to a car) They had an 80 mile long backup, there was a monstrous wreck and fire that killed 100 people, of course no emergency vehicles could get to that wreck, or anyone else for that matter.

So, evacuating can be tricky and deadly as well. Now what happens if you've got the 80 mile traffic jam and the hurricane or associated tornados pass over the traffic jam, cars overturned, strokes, heart attacks, babies being born, and no emergency help?

Not everything is as simple as it sounds.

This smacks of PERSONAL RESPONSIBLIITY. If I get sick, I want to be bailed out by the federal gov't! Just like AIG etc.

That accountability sucks, unless someone else has to be accountable.......then I'm all for it.

So am I all for it. But who do do we make accountable? How about the vice president? (both incoming and outgoing.)
