Have a couple of questions for those whose homes have been burglarized. Here's what they took...LCD TV, Nintendo Wii with 8 games, digital camera, camcorder, Ipod, Dell Laptop. I have given the police the serial numbers for the TV, Laptop, Wii, and digital camera, and apparently they work with Pawn Shops to help with recovery. Has anyone here been fortunate enough to have stolen things returned to them in this manner? I am looking for any glimmer of hope here. My girlfriend and I worked hard for all of this stuff and are pretty bummed out about it. Thanks for your help...and no, we did not have renters insurance (lesson learned).
I'm sorry to hear of your misfortune and wish you luck with getting any of it back.
Some 20 dollar bills and a trip down to Third st. will do much better of a job with regards to finding your stuff.
Dang man I'm sorry to hear that. If you don't have renter's insurance go and get it. You can get coverage pretty cheap and it's worth it in the long run. My parents had a fire in an apartmentt they were renting while their house was being built and it burned up the kitchen. Needless to say they had no insurance and had to drop off around 10 grand for all the damage that could've been prevented for way less than a hundred dollars a month. Good luck getting your stuff back and try looking in West Memphis.
Hope you get lucky and get your stuff back but most don't. I had a guitar that was stolen from me(very special guitar to me,). After 3 months I got a call from a friend that said he found it at a pawn shop for more than what I paid. They had already sold my 200 dollar case that was with it. I told them it was stolen and it didn't seem to bother them. What shocked me most was I found out It was a close friend(so I thought), who stole it. His name was on the pawn ticket.

Before I got that call, I took a day off and went to tons of pawns shops in Memphis. They are not helpful. They won't give you much assistance at all. I had serial numbers and they still wouldn't go check.

It is good you have given the police the serial numbers, but I don't know what kind of system pawn shops keep the serial numbers on. If Memphis does have a data base system, the crooks probably know this and take the stuff to perhaps a place across state lines or in a smaller populated area that doesn't have that kind system. My guitar was actually pawned at a small place in Horn lake. It's going to be tough and I feel for you. I hope you get your stuff back and I hope they get locked up.
If you have the serial numbers and they don't remove them all you have to do is walk in and grab it. You may have to call the police for assistance but they will help you retrieve your property.
Good luck.
Even if you don't own a dog, put a BEWARE OF DOG sign on your doors, fences and wherever a bad person can see it. Most don't want to bother with confronting a dog.

I agree missj. Crooks will go elsewhere if they even think there is a dog lurking about. Personally, I have 2 dogs that each weigh close to 100lbs...it helps me sleep a little easier at night and I'm not worried when I leave my house.
Thanks for the well wishes. I am losing hope about getting our stuff back. After reading up on the issue, crooks are smart. I guess it is easy to get rid of serial numbers, so even if they do or did sell to a pawn shop in Memphis, chances are slim that I will get things back. Chock this up to lesson learned. A tough lesson, but we will know better in the future nonetheless.
Hate to hear it. But these days, no one wants to work. They want it given to them, or they just steal it. Too bad they didn't get shot dead on the spot.

A dog, an alarm, and heavy storm doors are excellent ways to make the pieces of crap go somewhere else. Combine the three, and you should be good. Of course, if you're renting, you may not be able to do any of the above. If you get a dog, get one that at least has a "bark" to it.

This dog in the bottom right corner may look sweet. But if she doesn't know you, she will raise hell and go straight for your nuts. I'm not kidding either. If i tell her its ok, then she's cool with it after she smells you down. She's only 45 pounds, but can be very intimidating.

Pawn shops often have stores in other states. They will take in merchandise in one state but ship it and record it as being received in another state. This makes it unlikely for people to find their stuff.
Odds are that you won't get any of your stuff back. We had our house broke into a month and a half ago. took over 3k of stuff. I wish I was home and had my shot gun because those low life's should be dead imo. I still have such hate for them...i could go on and on. about renters insurance, i'm not sold on it yet. it has been over a month and all that has happened with us with renters insurance is getting screwed. they act like they are the ones with the raw deal when in reality, we'll lose 3k of stuff and they'll lose 700 or 800 bucks.
I've got some NRA stickers on my car and front door. They do a good job as well.
sorry to hear that. As others said, it's unlikely you'll recover that stuff.

20 years ago when I lived in Watergrove apartments in Memphis, I thought my things were safe. I had my car stolen on one occasion and then came home to find my sliding glass door shattered to pieces. Gone were my TV, VCR, girlfiend's jewelry and assorted other crap. I never saw any of it.

Glad to see things have gotten better in Memphis.

They have improved so much that just the other day the city council offered a additional 5 mil. to the police department that the director turned down. I guess he didn't feel that he needed to beef up on our wonderful city crime!
This happened to me 6 months ago and we found out it was the direct tv installers. They also robbed a couple of other homes in the same area. They stole the exact same things from that they got from you, have you had direct tv or any other contractors in your house recently?
Here's a random story that is somewhat a related issue:

My family's barber was doing some yard work outside of his barbershop on the day his shop is closed. He went around to cut the yard in the back and when he came back around front he noticed that someone had stolen his leaf blower from his truck. He got in his truck and drove around the area. He drove by a pawn shop and saw a guy with his leaf blower out front showing the guy from the pawn shop that it worked. I should point out that my family' barber is a third degree black belt and a former karate instructor. He got out of his car, grabbed the guy and slammed him up against the well, and told him to give him his f***ing leaf blower back. Needless to say, he got his leaf blower back.
I hate to hear stories like this. So sorry for your loss.

As an Allstate agent, I can tell you that depending on what part of town you live in, renters insurance will range from as little $25/month (for a minimum $15,000 policy, $250 deductible) to as much as $50/month (in high crime areas).

The policy covers your personal possessions, meals at restaurants and dry cleaning/laundry bills and hotel bills(for fire).

If you have expensive 'toys', then you need to take out at least $25,000 coverage and take an inventory of those things you treasure most.

There's no excuse for NOT having renters insurance as cheap as it is. Sorry if that comes across as condescending.

i know we've all heard it before, but it would be nice if these crooks spent as much time doing something productive as they do on trying get ahead illegally.

Interesting --- In the I HATE COMCAST thread, I posted something about a DTV guy jumping my fence to get in a couple hours before the 12-4 appointment time. I didn't have my big HDTV then so I guess he didn't see anything through the French doors he liked...
