Cheerleader banned from moving body - Pics and video of SMU cheerleader Jamie Burns, who is banned from moving her body while cheering because she has a pacemaker, even though the school gave her an athletic scholarship knowing that Burns had a pacemaker inserted five years ago.

Jamie said school officials told her Friday she could no longer perform with the squad despite the fact that she cheered with the squad during the previous week’s game.

SMU officials now say Jamie Burns can cheer, but only from the sidelines, clapping and chanting. She can’t move her feet; she can’t kick her legs; she can’t jump in the air. Basically, the cheerleader is banned from moving her body at all, just her hands.

School officials say she’s an insurance liability, but Burns had already signed a waiver of liability stating she would not sue the university “in any way, shape or form.”

Burns cheered all through high school with the pacemaker and her cardiologist sent SMU officials release forms saying Jamie can engage in full activity with no restrictions. Another form states that she should avoid direct contact sports, but that cheerleading is okay.

stupid southern methodists ... she signed forms/waivers and got clearance from her doctor ... not sure what else she can do, except sue them because of all that crap ... well, now that they got her to sign that waiver for no suing the university "in any way, shape or form" that solution is out the window ...
I bet that waiver said she wouldn't sue "in any way, shape or form" if there is any physical harm done while cheering because of her pacemaker.

It probably didn't cover discrimination suits.
that's a girl I would never date - nothing but trouble there.
I side with the cheerleader she should be allowed to cheer. She knows and accepts the risk.
Its probably to protect the school from her parents in case she dies
