Jon Kreft, a 7-foot, 260-pound post player at Chipola Junior College in Florida has committed to play at UAB. Kreft delivered the news to UAB coach Mike Davis on Wednesday and will sign with the 2009 class.
This is a pretty significant commitment for Davis' program. Kreft is one of the top junior college big men in the country. Recruiting analyst Mike Mitchell of Midwest Scouting Service has Kreft ranked as the No. 6 junior college player in the country in his preseason rankings and added that he couldn't imagine any JUCO ranking having Kreft out of the top 10. He also said Kreft is in the top three in JUCO big men.
Kreft was ranked as a five-star recruit by rivals.com as a high school senior at Stoneman Douglas High in Parkland, Fla. and signed to attend Florida State. But Florida State rescinded his scholarship after he was charged with felony cocaine possession and misdemeanor marijuana possession and drug-paraphernalia possession in May of 2006. Kreft said he spent more than a year in jail before enrolling at Chipola and has worked hard to get past his mistakes.
When I reached him today, he answered questions about his commitment and his past. He certainly didn't shy away from his past.
"A lot of people can read a newspaper and think bad things about you," Kreft said. "It takes a lot to get your image back. I'm showing people who I really am now. I'm really not a bad person, I made mistakes and I've moved on."
While it is good that we have a big guy commit, I wonder about the drug problems. I hope he really has moved on from his shady past. If he has, 2009 is shaping up to be a top 5 recruiting class.
I trust Davis on character issues. Anyone who can get through to Walter Sharpe should be given the benefit of the doubt with anyone.
"Mempis....Wait till Next Year"
Can we get this painted above the student section?
Throw Mayfield's jersey on him and sneak him into the lineup this year.
Wow. Must've been pretty bad if Free Shoes ran him off.

Absolutely not. This IS next year, and words, thoughts and deeds along these lines are an insult to seniors like Robert Vaden, Paul Delaney III, Lawrence Kinnard, Ed Berrios, Mike Davis Jr. who will carry us to Six Straight NOW.

"Wait til next year" is quickly replacing Zero Brown's "well, no one wins there" as the damning phrase that drools from our lips to excuse our failures. And I do not settle for failure.

I agree. I believe wholeheartedly that 2008-09 is going to be a better year than 2009-10. Despite the talent level we have next year, it will take a long time for them to learn to play as a team and for Davis to quell the egos that will be on that team.

On the other hand, 2008-09 is going to be the Year of the Senior, and UAB has generally always had a strong year when they had a senior laden team.

I don't think ANYONE could mistake Kreft for Mayfield.
Is Bledsoe, Jeremy Jacob, or Gary Flowers next?

I don't think ANYONE could mistake Kreft for Mayfield.

None of our opponents remember Mayfield. We'll just say he was sick and didn't dress last year.
Kreft is a HUGE pick up! He was a 5 star center!!

He was the 29th overall player on the board per Rivals that year, just one behind lottery pick Robin Lopez
He will drop to a 4 star now that he has signed with us. 03-melodramatic

KREFT GIVES UAB A PLEDGE, NOT 100 PERCENT DONE

According to a source close to the situation, one-time Florida State signee Jon Kreft has given UAB coach Mike Davis a verbal commitment.

Kreft is spending his second season at Chipola Junior College (Fla.) after he wasn’t admitted to Florida State and spent time in jail following a drug arrest.

However, the pledge to UAB may not be 100 percent done. Sources indicated that Kreft is scheduled to take a visit to Florida State this weekend, so stay tuned. Things could change with the talented 7-footer.

Remember Jon Kreft? Once one of the biggest Florida State recruits -- both literally and figuratively -- of Leonard Hamilton era, Kreft has landed at UAB, according to the Birmingham News.

Good for Kreft. It seems he's gotten his life back on track after a felony cocaine charge and misdemeanor durg charges almost derailed it. Kreft, once a heralded five-star recruit, told the Birmingham News that he spent a year in jail before attending Chipoloa Junior College.

There had been rumblings that FSU was trying to get back in the mix for Kreft, who told the News that, "A lot of people can read a newspaper and think bad things about you. It takes a lot to get your image back. I'm showing people who I really am now. I'm really not a bad person, I made mistakes and I've moved on."

And so the poaching begins...

No and we shouldn't. Sounds like what we fans say to Southern Miss in football each year, and that is not good.

IMHO, both teams should focus on our OOC schedules and then our game will become a major and national event.

Congrats on the verbal. Quality 7 footers are a rare commodity.
Just so we are prepared for the jokes.

Apparently Mr. Kreft found a unique hiding place for his drugs when stopped by the police.

Quote:Uncomfortable Places

This story is about yet another college athlete getting into trouble... this one, however, gives a new meaning to "up your butt, around the corner."

Jon Kreft, a Florida State basketball recruit, was charged with a felony cocaine possession, misdemeanor marijuana possession, and drug-paraphernalia possession last Thursday during a traffic stop. The driver of the Toyota was a minor with a learner's permit. The driver received two citations and was released on the spot.

The officer stopped the car after it failed to come to a complete stop at a stop sign. Another officer arrived at the scene and "observed Kreft reach under the passenger seat." According to the report, Kreft was told to keep his hands in sight. Officer Gorman, the officer that made the stop, wrote in the report, "There was what I believed based on my training and experience, marijuana residue on the floor of the vehicle." According to The Tallahassee Democrat, the driver consented to a search of the vehicle.

The search turned up a bag with about 15 grams of marijuana and a digital scale under the passenger's seat with marijuana residue on it. Kreft was arrested on the scene.

Here's where it gets interesting - and extremely embarassing for Kreft.

According to the report, "Kreft then stated that he had something else on him, and said it was in the (crevice) of his buttocks. Jonathan [Kreft] was then given permission to retrieve it, at which time he stuck his hands between his buttocks, and a small plastic bag fell to the ground with suspect cocaine in it."

That's right. Kreft had 1.7 grams of cocaine in a plastic bag, between his buttocks. Now that had to feel good!

This could be extremely bad news for the Seminoles. FSU athletic director, Dave Hart, told the newspaper on Friday, "We'll wait until the police report and all the details are on our desk, and then we'll make a decision based on those facts." Hart went on to say, "If it warrants retracting the scholarship, we have done that and would do that... In that case, we don't assess sport or talent or anything else. We just do the right thing."

Florida State rules prohibit student-athletes from competing while being charged with a felony. Hart stated that he does not support admitting a student-athlete facing felony charges.

Head Coach Leonard Hamilton said, through a spokesman, that he will not comment until he can gather additional information.

This is bad news for Florida State, and obviously Kreft. Kreft was a 7-0, 240 lbs., five-star recruit, and ranked by Rivals.com as the number 29 prospect in the class of 2006. He was a high school star in Parkland, FL., and committed to Florida State almost two years ago.

I had Florida State finishing fourth in the ACC next season, not anymore though. The 'Noles are facing questions in the frontcourt, and now will likely be hurting for big men. Center Alexander Johnson has stated that he will remain in the NBA Draft. Power forward Ryan Reid did not qualify academically last year to compete, but FSU has not released details on his eligibility for next season.
