Obviously the kid has baggage, but if he can stay clean then he looks like a great get. Kent fans, any word on if he's qualified? The article stated that he hadn't passed Maryland's admissions exams yet. Also, what's the catch with him being a walk-on? I'm assuming KSU has a scholarship available in '09 that they'd eventually use for him?
He would have been admitted to Maryland. According to one of our fans:
Quote:As another point to clarify a misstatement others have written about Tyree (not on this board, but fans from other schools), Tyree walked away from Maryland after his past became an issue. Gary Williams has been quoted as saying that Tyree wouldn't have been able to get a parking ticket in College Park. So, he moved on. Also, Tyree passed the athletics department admissions process by a vote of 4-1 at Maryland.
He begins classes today at KSU.
With two years of eligibility, he would get a scholarship next season, or at least that's the presumption if he stays.
Quote:Evans' addition will make Kent State the clear favorite in the MAC and possibly one of the top mid-major programs in the nation. The Golden Flashes return three starters from a team that went 28-7 and reached the NCAA Tournament.

Jumping the gun a little there I think (was that a news piece or an editorial?). Interesting get though no doubt.

Well, given Kent's 5 NCAA tournaments and 4 tournament wins in the last ten years, I would say that only Gonzaga and SIU clearly exceed Kent's accomplishments over that time period among mid-majors. So, saying Kent is one of the top mid-major programs is a fact.
Kent State would have cruised throught the MAC again without Evans. With him, it will be like this year's Olympics!!!!
Not to rain on the parade here, but while Evans is certainly a talent, he doesn't really do much to address Kent's biggest question mark heading into the season - the front court. Evans' minutes will primarily be coming at the expense of Al Fisher/Chris Singletary/Rodriquez Sherman. While Evans is undoubtedly an upgrade, I'm not sure that he upgrades that trio enough to substantially change Kent's performance this season. The Flashes' success both in the MAC and (in particular) out of conference will still come down to whether they can adequately replace Quantance and Scott in the front court.
You might want to check out the youtube highlights of Evans!!! Kent will win the MAC by Feb.

What do YouTube highlights have to do with BobcatFan's well thought analysis of Kent basketball needs? Anyway, here's hoping those front court needs aren't addressed by the time they visit Philly this fall.

Overall, good signing though...

=>I think he was referring to the statement about being a clear favorite to win the league.

He can play 2 and bump Singletary to 3 while Sherman recovers from his knee injury (and may even redshirt this season), They have quite the rotation for the 1, 2 and 3 positions, with quite a few guys interchangeable. The frontcourt will certainly come from Sullinger, the other signees like Simpson or Henry-Ala or even one of the 2 freshman, Parks will get some minutes at center and Woods or DiMaria may get some time at the 4, but probably 3. They'll be OK, but thanks for the concern. The main concern is obviously chemistry and how they'll have keep everybody happy distributing the rock while some of these guys like gunning it.

Julian Sullinger F-C 6-5 235 Sr.
Rashad Woods F 6-5 235 Sr.
Frank Henry-Ala F 6-6 Jr.
Alex Grimsley F 6-6 Fr. (Redshirt?)
Antonio DiMaria F 6-7 200 RFr.
Justin Greene F 6-7 220 Fr. (Redshirt?)
Anthony Simpson F-C 6-8 230 Jr.
Brandon Parks C 6-10 290 Jr.
Can't, what happened to the Brazilian center?
Since there's no "Can't" around here I'll answer it for them, he transferred to Ashland.
That's too bad. So your starting center is 6'5"?

You've recruited a bunch of underage Chinese girls to play for Kent?

Yes, we have, along with lots of fake fireworks and table tennis players like you wouldn't believe. And we'll "disappear" anyone who doesn't buy the party line about how good we are.

So you can't read the part where they have guys 6'6" - 6'10"?

And we are close to panicsville. We may have a hard time winning a game without a real center. We may appeal to the NCAA to allow us to play 6 at a time since we only have a team of guards. I see another 4th place finish like last year. 03-banghead 05-stirthepot
